The board arrived today. This Brazilian company Hands Custom had a 21% off sale and everything looked like what I’m going for, so I thought I’d take a chance and check one out.

This is the 12x24 VTX with the shelf.

First impressions:

The bad:
  • The soft case is super cheap, but should get the job done
  • Some of the finish work is a little sloppy (see the pic of the rivet on the top shelf)
The good:
  • I love the teak sides!
  • Plenty of space under the board for a power supply
  • I love the on/off switch and 1/4” jacks. I’ll probably add a couple XLR jacks in the empty slots
  • The size should be perfect.
  • Seems sturdy and generally well built (with a few flaws)
  • I didn’t give Vertex any money
Can’t wait to start putting it all together!

I swapped all of mine to EBS Gold Flats and haven't found a dud among them yet. Costly, but also strangely satisfying.
I bought a few of those to try out, and I also found them to be of superior quality and "strangely satisfying".

The only reason I didn't invest in more of them is their lack of repairability. It's an issue for me because I am always modifying my boards and tend to unintentionally mistreat my cables.
:facepalm

Yeah the EBS Flats are good but I still find the solderless Evidence Audio SIS + Monorail stuff more practical as you can have the exact right length needed. I mainly use EBS for TRS and TRS -> 2xTS cables.

Evidence Audio SIS + Monorail

This is what I went with.

I found 8 right-angle plugs and 2’ of Monorail cable in one of my drawers of random stuff so I figured I might as well make use of that and save a little. I remember it worked well for me in the past

Is there anything LESS fun than spending $350 on patch cables…

Man, I’ve been having pretty good luck with these solderless kits off Amazon-

I did my FM9 board with them, but that thing is so zip-tied down it’s not surprising it’s held up. The real test has been on the pedalboard in my studio where I’m constantly plugging/unplugging/pushing pedals all over the place and not being neat and tidy about it at all. I’ve yet to yank a wire out of the jack and can’t hear any audio issues/degradation anywhere. I’ll likely use them when I finalize/wire up the board with the loop switcher.

I almost went with either those or Kurrent Electric. I’m sure they would have been just fine, but I chickened out at the last minute and went with what’s worked for me in the past

This pedalboard looks awesome. Definitely update with some pics once you get it put together.

Re: cables, I have never bought fancy cables before, always random mismatched stuff, and soldering my own using pieces of old instrument cables. I needed more compact cables so I just bought a 10 pack of ernie ball flat cables in various lengths, on sale for 35 bucks on amazon. We’ll see how they hold up but they seem nice and very compact and it came with a good variety of lengths.
