Adventures in pedalboard building

Dude. I watched her cradle that thing in her arms like 5 times. For some unholy reason I needed one of them to actually say, "Holy god this thing is like the size of a forearm." :rofl

I really should pay closer attention to the things I type.

I’m loving the Micro Flanger, the Micro Chorus is… ok. I don’t think it has enough depth. Instead of sounding deep and rich it kind of flattens things out.

I may end up on a chorus search

Kindly try the CE-5. It is more versatile than CH-1 because of the EQ. But CH-1 is easy to dial in.

Hopefully you are aware that there are analog and recent digital versions of both abovementioned boss pedals. The digital ones will be more useful if you plan on using chorus with dirt pedals. They don't clip unlike analog versions which sometimes do. Analogs have a "warmer" sound though.

There is quite some info on these versions online. Like in the article below:

I don’t want to over complicate, but I’m tempted to do something I like to do with digital signal paths and add an A/B to create two separate pedal signal paths - one for clean tones and the other for drive tones.

I like that because I have some effects that I only use for one or the other, and then I can toggle quickly between something like a clean tones with chorus and spring reverb to a drive sound with a TS and delay in a simple way that doesn’t require Scenes or MIDI

And so it begins.

:rofl

Not sure what your size requirements are, Met. I know you have room now. :idk
The Pastfx and Warm Audio Chorus Ensemble clones are really great. You also
get a footswitchable Vibrato option---and that Hi/Lo Z switch on the Input side.

I’m planning to keep the number of pedals small, so there could be room for some big pedals. I’ve definitely been tempted by both of those!

There’s an old Deluxe Memory Man for sale locally and there’s a ridiculous part of me that keeps thinking about building a whole board of the old EHX big box pedals :ROFLMAO:

I think the MXR micro chorus is gonna go

It boosts mids and if anything I’d prefer to scoop mids a little with the type of tones I use chorus for.

I dig the simplicity of 1 knob though. I’m tempted to try a Small Clone before going to more complex pedals. I used to like that one a lot

The Small Clone does a cool thing, but they can be a bit noisy.

Now you are speaking my Love Language. :love

I definitely prefer the older Big Box EHX Analog lineup versus the new mostly digital/DSP
smaller enclosure lineup of the current EHX.

Warts an all. I mean... wall warts and all.

I may have discussed this in the past but even their current lineup says they need 9.6V. Other manufacturers usually say that their pedals need 9v. I think this is why they function best with their wall warts.

Their older pedals have even weird voltage requirements, I think upto 24v. This may be the reason for the high headroom and no other pedal sounding like them.

They need the frequent maintainence though. Friend's dad has a memory man in his collection, and he sent it to some repair person for maintainence. He says he does that after every 2 years.

I don't know what it means but he got the BBDs recalibrated and footswitch changed.

Not looking to be a buzzkill, BUT:

I have entertained that idea a few times, but always realized (I love that term when it comes to pedalboard-related shenanigans) it's not worth the hassle.

Power requirements are all over the place with the old aluminium "Trapezoid" EHX stuff (center positive, 9V, 12V, 24V, wall warts, internal PSU, etc).

And they get wacky, if they aren't already. PCB's wobble as you turn a knob, footswitches become unreliable, toggles and faders break, enclosures catch rust, battery doors get in the way (looking at you, NYC BMP and Octave Multiplexer), yadda yadda yadda...

Maybe some day, but I gotta have my priorities set, I guess.

You'll certainly need lots of elbow grease and occasional TLC to run an all-vintage-EHX spaceship.

Yeah, I’ve owned several of them in the past, I know what I’d be getting into.

Still very tempting
