More in the 'stories of minimalism' series

I'd like to try the RE-2 at some point. Tape delay and reverb in one compact pedal with tap tempo functionality. Add some wow & flutter and you've got yourself a stew.

If you wanna check out tape delay on a budget, try the fender hammertone space pedal. Has preset "patterns".

I had tried it when I was thinking of buying a delay. It's simple and is capable of helping us create good sounds.

I am a boss fangirl actually but tape delays (simulations) like RE-2 take time to get used to because of the "mode" knob. Nothing sounds like them, as you know. Simply stunning.

I have way too many pedal options, but I can get almost everything I need from ...

Brown Amplification Protein
Origin Effects Magma57 (vibrato)
Keeley Halo

For convenience / quality of life I would include...

TC Electronic Polytune Mini
Lichtlaerm Audio Key & the Gate

Anything beyond that is just gravy.

I found a used one for pretty cheap and ordered that to mess around with. I've got a couple analog pedals (DM-2, Carbon Copy) and a digital delay (DD-3T), but they are all pretty basic and none of them are tape style. I really like the Space Echo effect where I've used it, lots of interesting stuff in there (multiple heads, reverb, preamp, modulation).

Well... I picked up a Warwick Rockboard Quad 4.4 plus soft case for £80. It aint G3 friendly, but it's definitely "a bunch of single stomps and maybe one or two clever pedals" friendly!

The rejig begins.

This was as minimal as I ever got I think:

Which is more or less where I'm going with it now.

How long ago was that setup? Annoyingly I don't have pictures of my old pedalboards. I only ever really took pictures of guitars and amps in the past, really wish I still had pics of my boards too.
I've got tons of photos of my old setups tbh. If you want, I'll bore you with them! :rofl

In 2016 I got a Helix, and although I had single pedals kicking around since then, I never used them live because with the last band I sorta painted myself into a corner with the requirements that only Helix could deliver.

So, take it as read that I want a reverse delay into a digital delay. And let's assume I don't want a big full on multi-effect. And let's assume that I don't have the Plethora X3 - which I do, but I want to do this thought exercise (ouchie!) without it being a consideration.

What delay or delays would you get to do this?? DD500 isn't the one, because the way the internal series routing works, you get properly fucked up idiotic delay times that make no sense when compared to taking two DD7's and putting them in series.

So what else is there??

And for a more complicated question, requirements:
- Preset switching
- Two delays at once
- Low noise floor
- Seamless preset switching
- Spillover between presets
- Tempo display, or at least a flashing light

What you reckon? Best I can come up with is two DD-200's in series.

We've had a lot of the same pedals.

So tonight was:

Lehle Mono Volume
Dunlop Crybaby 535Q
TC Electronics Polytune 2 Mini
Boss DD-8
Boss RV-5
MXR Reverb

And tbh, I did not struggle to get what I wanted. I spent a bit of time tweaking the knobs every now and then, but it was no hardship. This is quite a difference compared to what sort of patches I ran on my Helix from 2016-2021, and the kinds of patches I've been assembling on the Axe FX III.

I did have the Boss DM-101 as well, but tbh tonight I didn't use it once.

I think writing songs with the band, and sacking off my GigRig G3 switcher, and going back to tap dancing... it has sort of given me a trend towards keeping stuff minimal, and I really like it.
Sorry if I missed it… what were you using for drive? Or multichannel amp?

Just curious. Those who use reverb (pedals) live, how do you not get lost in the mix?

I have observed that it's tricky.

How do you use two DD-7s? Both set in analog mode?

One set for slapback and another for longer delays?

You also have/ had a DD-3. Does it feel obtrusive if you only like to have delay kind of in the background?

When I tried delays, I liked analog (or analog simulations) because they did not get in the way of playing.

It's an art to incorporate delays in one's playing, and I have long given up.

Judicious pre-delay and appropriate mix. Don’t get crazy with space size on the reverb. Consider if delay might be better. Manage the brightness of the effect.
