Line 6 Helix Stadium

The particular Fractal user quirk is they buy a FAS whatever then proceed to expect every piece of gear released from every other manufacturer to be instantly ported to it.

The particular Helix user quirk is they've never played a real amp or any other modeler yet argue to the death that it's all the same in their best Stuart Smalley impersonation.

...he said; with love.
Yep, then there’s some of us that are old enough to have played everything under the sun, in our bedrooms, in band rehearsals, on stage, in studios, and know what’s good to us when we hear it. More musicians should have more experiences, absolutely.

I like the Badonk and the 5150 and the Recto (I am betting I would like them morerer in Agoura, though). I'll end up with a Stadium of some sort I am sure. I want the regular model though without the exp so that's a little farther down the road.

Oh some of us are old enough but just didn't get the chance to play much, trying to make up for it now though.

Yeah I didn’t really like the Helix, I bought the HX Stomp twice because I just loved the form factor, and I had the HX effects for awhile too. Comparing the models in the HX to fractal amps and effects, it was just night and day better on Fractal. The Fractal amps sounded like my real tube amps and the effects put you in a space in a way I didn’t get from the Helix effects. I will say I love the functionality of the HX effects over the VP4, but the effects quality of the VP4 keeps it on my board in place of a HX effects.

I’m interested in the Stadium now because that brief demo with Ola sounded very good and it feels like Line 6 really stepped up their game with this one.

Historically; I agree completely. Though my last go round with the Stomp for FX and routing was great and I did feel like there was a good step up from the time I had it before? I think the Stadium is definitely going to continue that upward trajectory \m/

That makes sense. It’s been 2-3 years since I had a Stomp and I’m sure there have been firmware updates that improved it.

Won't lie—Helix's older Hybrid Cab engine held us back (and we're not bringing it forward to Stadium). The new cabs from 3.5 sound and respond so much better, a lot of people are foregoing IRs. Plus, we've improved a bunch of other things behind the scenes.

In our most recent double-blind A/B/X listening tests to ensure Agoura was real and not a placebo, OG Helix (running 3.80) fared far better than anyone thought it would. It absolutely, positively didn't sound like a 10-year-old engine... because technically, it's not. Another particular product fared far worse than anyone thought it would, even when played by people who owned it.

Some cool ideas here (and keep 'em coming), but just like how we're actively eschewing the notion of Showcase ever becoming a proper DAW, we'll probably also actively eschew the notion of Stadium being one's primary hardcore studio interface. Line 6 needs to focus on what we do best, and "Oh, if you just do this big lift outside your wheelhouse, I can sell this other piece of gear" doesn't generally motivate us to pivot from our long-term goals.

Some of us have played for a long time as well and that's why the question on monitoring - Fractal offers additional speaker modeling parameters that can make a big difference if you're playing through FRFR.

But if you're playing through a guitar cab, IR / speaker modeling doesn't into play, and I've found that L6 is in no way behind compared to anyone else. FRFR can be a crapshoot as it can mean almost anything.

I’ve tried the HX effects through my Adam Audio studio speakers with onboard cab modeling and also with IRs I know and trust, through the FX loop of a JP2C and through a Mesa 2:90 through a 1999 Mesa OS 4x12. I no way did I find the high gain models in the HX stomp up through roughly 3 years ago to be my cup of tea.

Please make the editor worl with touch like being able to use focus view drag from the editor!

HXEdit currently isn't really touch friendly. I have a Surface Pro I tried to use and it's not great.

I think you’re onto something with what you’ve built into the Stadium. When the non-pedal version releases early next year I’m going to give it a go. Obviously an HX Effects-style variant would be great, and who doesn’t love a 1 or 2 space rack piece (3 is far too big IMO), but I think this device and ecosystem is a dramatic step up.

"Hardcore studio interface" seems to be the sticking point here, though. There are plenty of home studio types for whom their high end guitar modeler is perfectly adequate, who might not want to add another piece of hardware, more cables, more configuration software, etc. Helix and QC have both been great for me as studio hubs, they just tend to get almost permanently embedded.

(That said, I get that it makes good business sense for you to focus on your core user group.)

@Digital Igloo
  1. Can you enable/disable the preamp and/or power amp sections of the Agora models? (Im assuming so, but just checking)
  2. When manual?
  3. Are you guys planning some sort of video manual or companion?

Without divulging too many trade secrets, I'm curious why? Was it a quality thing? A storage thing? Lack of DSP meaning you had to go one way rather than another with the inherent convolution techniques?
It's not DSP, because the new cabs take up way less horsepower. It was simply the way we decided to do things back in 2012, which at the time was fine. But as our amp modeling improved, we needed a better cab engine to do it justice.

  1. Not at launch. Also note that 1.1 won't have Agoura preamps, only full amps. Those are coming a bit later.
  2. It's done but I need to dig in and make sure it's accurate, as it currently reflects our TRD, which overserves. The whole thing is web-based so we'll be able to update and improve things at any time.
  3. We're talking about stuff.

Interface wise: definitely… sound and effect wise: unsure yet… the stadium seems more like just the OG helix with a very nice touchscreen that incorporates a few new tricks

There was a guy at the other place who's entire "studio" ran on a device you have owned but did not mention in your post. He created a multipage thread on how his "studio" was "down" and it was crucial that said device get fixed because of this. It was probably one of the dumbest threads I've ever read but still laughed myself hoarse on because of how inherently ridiculous it was :rofl

Digital igloo can maybe Yamaha higher cliff to run line 6 or maybe just buy his whole company fractal so you guys can basically make a fractal unit with your slick interface?
