Line 6 Helix Stadium Talk

This video is pretty much my thread ramblings & excitement

Thanks for sharing that and it does sound more dynamic to me than the previous HX devices. I'm looking forward to getting mine tomorrow.

I'll admit - I got caught up in some of the negative comments in threads over the weekend while catching up on the bugs/updates and history.

correct me if I'm wrong, but your comparison of the new vs old models is as they are both played through the Stadium? A true old to new test would be having the old model played through the OG Helix. I only say this as the Stadium would be adding its own inherent new improvements.

I think both clips sound good regardless and it would be all I would need. or should. lol.
The differences between OG helix and Stadium are only going to be the converters and circuitry though right?

I don’t doubt that the new ones are improved but the overall DSP/modelling is going to be the same once it’s got itself into the modeller. If you reamped both through USB/SPDIF, wouldn’t they be identical?

I’d imagine comparing A/D converters to be much much smaller than the difference between legacy models and agoura

All I'd really expect to hear between the OG unit and the Stadium is a lower noise floor, maybe a slightly crisper high-end on the DI signal because of converter quality differences, but nothing that would be night and day.

ya, but I think it would be more apples to apples if the OG was used. OR.
compare the OG Helix Panama with Stadium's version of the original Panama.

The hardware is different.
Higher dynamic headroom statistics, perhaps different AD/DA converters, perhaps a different DI algorithm altogether.
People are stating that the new Stadium has a better feel.
Is that hardware based or is it part of the new Agora modeling/models.

I'm not discounting any value of Nathan's test at all.
His test compares 2 models that are available in the new Stadium.
IMO, it just isn't comparing the real old model until you are using the OG Helix.

For those sitting on the fence pondering whether to buy the new platform, and still have the Original Helix, it may prove helpful.

I don’t notice Stadium feeling better than Helix on Hx amps in practical usage. The big increase in feel is definitely a product of Agoura.

wait what? I'll remove this once people have seen it. I know it's not the right location.

YOU SEE, DEAN; IN THE THREAD ENTITLED 'FRACTAL AUDIO ICONS PLUG-IN'; THERE IS INFORMATION ON SAID PLUG-IN

I'm not thread police or anything, but the only relevance this has to Stadium usage is that some people (i.e. ME) are going to fasho use Proxy to capture some of their favorite FAS amps via these ICONS plugins.

I'm disappointed there was no apple biting in this message.
I did a quick search for a Carlito gif but his one seemed funnier so I am going with it :rofl

I thought I'd write up some thoughts I have on Stadium.

So at the moment.... a very buggy experience overall. Like the unit, almost every time I turn it on, somehow finds a way to log me out of my account, even when my WIFI is available and working.

The Agoura stuff is not blowing me away. I can get good enough sounds, but the amps aren't setup in a realistic enough way and so a lot of the UX benefits are immediately lost in trying to find the right control. It isn't a huge deal of course. But there's a lot of death by a thousand cuts stuff going on; which is essentially the TLDR of my whole experience.

I think there's something bloated and over saturated going on in the modelling somewhere. I'm not sure if it is poweramp related or not. But I feel like there's a distinct lack of sheen, fizz, clarity, brightness, aggressive frequencies are smoothed out in favour of a more instant gratification sound; and for me, I want as RAW as possible, as close to the real amp experience as possible. I've got the skills to smooth it out if I really want it.

Sometimes hype can help restore those frequencies, but it also introduces other artifacts that I'm not always keen on.

No new delays, or improvements to the existing ones. No new reverbs. This is a big big thing for me. I simply cannot and will not go back to a world where I just "made do" with the legacy Hall, or Ganymede, or whatever. Those algorithms are simply not a patch on even your bog standard 2003 made Boss RV-5. And when you compare to the BigSky? The MercuryX? The MXR reverb? No contest really. I can find sounds on those pedals that simply don't exist on Stadium or Helix. Hell.... a lot of the time they can't be found on Axe FX III either !

A lot of effort has gone into the showcase feature, and I'm glad to see that is happening for the people who want that functionality. But for me? Until I decide to take my Sloganyear stuff onto the stage, it just isn't a relevant part of the experience. Aside from testing a few things on it, I've barely touched it.

I'm very happy about the hardware quality. It seems really top notch to me. Best in class touchscreen. The I/O is fantastic, and easier to understand how to access everything than the Axe FX 3 is - I want mono, I just select the mono thing. The signal to noise ratio is very very good, and the overall sound quality is much better than the Quad Cortex - significantly so.

But I do kind of feel more like an early adopter on this unit than I ever did with the Quad Cortex. Which given the pedigree we're dealing with, is pretty damn concerning. If the regular Stadium Floor had kept the same I/O, I would have waited for that unit... and then maybe wouldn't feel so perturbed by my purchase.

My overall thought process lately has been along the lines of, maybe multi's aren't for me. Because I'm never satisfied. So a bunch of this is totally a "me problem" and not necessarily reflective of the actual objective reality. Totally possible that at this point my expectations are cranked far too high, and that I'm really spoilt. But I wanted this thing to absolutely kick immense amounts of arse, right out of the gate, and it's just sorta slapping the fat mans cheeks a bit.

Ultimately, I don't actually know why I bought this thing right now. GAS, sure. But I had dreams about going back to a Helix style device for my main board command centre, and it isn't there for me yet. I'm not entirely convinced it will be.

I thought you had returned it? Because apart from the very beginning you haven’t been that ecstatic about it?

Every time I play it, I’m shocked at how good it feels to play, it’s instant gratification in a way Helix never was (but awesome when dialed in and in 4CM). If I wasn’t loving it, I would’ve returned it and gotten something else.

Are you waiting to see what updates will do for it?

Nope. I never returned it. I was outside my return period, so just decided to keep it and see where it goes. I was a big OG Helix user, so I'm certainly not hating for the sake of hating.

Personally, I'm very happy with my Stadium XL. As I primarily use the Deluxe Reverb and AC30, the new Agora models really work for me, and the new cab block is excellent. I don't have an interest or an ear for high-gain, high-wattage heads, so I wouldn't know if they're on-point or not.

I do see some niggling issues that are just a sign of an early product. One example being the rapidly flashing tempo light on startup, but I'm sure these things will all be ironed out as the product matures.

Just on the reverbs, I think I've mentioned this before, but have you tried the Heliosphere with the Rev Mix turned to over 95%? I find that and the Shimmer or Ganymede afterwards can really sound lush.
