It finally happened.

Would work well I agree, but likely out of budget don't you think?
An FR10 is $500 and an FR12 is $600. Cheap enough to warrant consideration IMO. :) Shop around and you can probably get either of them under the stated budget of $500.

But I've resigned myself to the fact that I don't really understand where this thread is going. Maybe I didn't read along closely enough. Maybe the genre caught me off guard. Your last mention indicating that Ian wants to run guitar and bass to run through the same cabinet had me shaking my head again. Regardless, the FR12 suggestion was roundly dismissed for reasons completely unrelated to cost. Why it's any crazier than a 1x12 Katana or Catalyst or Mustang or ZLX or anything else... We may never know.

(Or maybe you were referring to my recommendation of a 2x12 and power amp, in which case a) never mind, and b) budget would be anywhere between $10 at a yard sale and $3000, season to taste.) :D

I’m not sure what you’re using on the modeling side but thinking it’s safe to assume current gen.

You can buy A LOT of tube combo amp for < $1k on the used market. It’s an easy way to get a tube power amp and speaker in a single portable enclosure. I see DSL40s for $600 all over the place, Mesa Dual Caliber combos too.

Split your presets and feed the effects return on one of those (or a combo of your choice) and rock on.
I use the return of my DSL40CR. It's done a great job for the past year gigging several different modelers through it. And just the other day, I discovered that the Presence and Resonance controls are post fx loop :columbo , so now it sounds even better.

Thread got off to a weird start, maybe on account of the word "metal" appearing ~0 times in the OP.
I thought I asked a pretty simple question but everyone needed qualifiers or wants to move the goalposts to appease their own opinion. Didn’t really think it was necessary when I was really just asking “does anyone have a suggestion for loud and cheap combo amps for guitar and bass”.

The problem is the bass part. There is no combo out there that would cut it for guitar and bass for your music, at the volume you’re playing at. Not even a Mesa 2x12 would survive that kind of punishment. What you need to be looking for is a powerful bass rig that can also handle guitar.

Perhaps too simple a question at the onset? Maybe the 8 pages and counting are an indication that we did need further qualifiers. I mean, I'm pretty sure people have suggested loud (always relative), cheap (also relative) combo amps throughout. :idk

FWIW; I wasn't shutting your suggestion down. The FR12 ime is nowhere near loud enough for the task at hand and I wouldn't trust a bass through it at these kinds of tunings. I wouldn't even utter the word Shatalyst but I do think a Katana head would have the juice required?

Thread is kind of on a zig zag because of genre requirements and preference/lack thereof of responders.

Thing is, once you dial it in for sufficient stage and house support levels, it'd simply start to walk over the stage on its own (unless you somehow mount it to the floor), washing machine style. But hey, maybe a great show effect.

I think it would puke its guts out and jettison the speaker in open defiance if you tried to pump a bass and guitar through it at those levels.

I’ve mentioned multiple times now that it is separate amps for each I’m asking about. Running everything through my rehearsal PA is part of the issue here, for sure.

Shit, I missed that part in the flurry of posts coming through. That makes it much easier.

A 1x12 would struggle a bit with the low end, but a 2x12 should be able to pull it off. An older generation Katana 100 2x12 checks most of your boxes.

Fwiw…I abandoned the katana 100w mk1 mentally 5 minutes into its first use at a gig, and it was for sale the next day…didn’t keep its back straight in a mix. (And that was nowhere near the sound density you seem to operate in ;)) Yeah yeah, I cranked the mids..in my mind it’s a typical SS thing that it becomes more challenging to stay afloat & avoid spiky highs when it gets louder….I have a lot more confidence in tube power if it has to be loud.

Speaking of bass rigs and sidetracks; this thing looks cool to my eyes. Other than the dumb Katana logo on the cabs

Yeah, I wasn't even aware we talking about bass at that point, let alone guitar and bass. :D

EDIT: To be clear, this was my bad:
So now I’m looking at cheap guitar and bass combos to anplify the Helix and a DI bass.
