It finally happened.

So, try to borrow a bass amp for your next rehearsal/show and see how it goes.
I might have my hands on a couple of options to try for bass. We’re gonna see how a 2x10 holds up. A previous heavy band the bassist was using 1x12 avatar cab for drop A and that thing slammed.

I wonder what speaker was in it? Sure as hell wasn’t a Greenback!

Fwiw, I really don't think much of the issue is really guitar related. Do something to free up the guitar monitor (whatever it is) from the bass, get a decent cab and amplification for just that bass (2nd hand 4x10 and pretty much any bass amp with some power) and call it a day.
For sure.

I love the way a good bass sounds through a good 2x10 (or 4x10). Note, a "good" bass cab isn't cheap. As an example, a MESA 2x10 bass cab runs around $1300 (or about half that used) but sounds glorious.

I think for your guitar and your expectations of volume, a tube amp would be best.

Ian, I'm curious where you're at with your questions now. Sounds like maybe you have an idea for bass? Have and idea for the guitar solution yet?

I’m going to start by separating the bass and guitar and see how that goes. Running shit that way in our 14’x14’ rehearsal space works awesome, but I think it’s just too much for a bigger room and the sounds. Outside of a handful of shows I’m content 99.9% of the time, so the less gear I have to have the better (blasphemy here, I know). I was also reminded that I have a powerblock and 2x12 guitar cabs can be had fairly inexpensively used, so I’ll probably start there if I want to add more stuff and just separating the signals isn’t cutting it.

At least go to the store and try it out. I think it is a better fit for what you desire.
And then I have to figure out how to get the sound into my IEM rig, and then I have to figure out how to get to sound the SAME every time in my IEM rig, then I have to figure out how integrate the FX I use which includes pre and post fx, so I’ll be bringing my Helix and even more cables on top of it. A tube amp that doesn’t solve any of my problems besides maybe volume and it adds a bunch more. Plus, I don’t like Mesa amps for gain without an EQ and a boost.

Good Lord!

You have an IEM Rig! ....... and you use a single low end "FRFR" for main amplification of your guitar AND bass?

Does the rest of the band have IEMs? How do you mix the IEMs?

What kind of FX do you use in a metal band that a Mesa can't do with a simple pedal?

Does your band have a website where I can see a setlist?

... and yeah, who ever heard of a Mesa amp for a metal band before!

Yes, everyone is on IEMs, we run tracks, our bass is on a track in one band, you didn’t read 90% of the threa if you’re still confused about the previous explanation of the amplification, I use lots of pitch, low-fi, and low-key ambient FX, why would a setlist help you? We’re a band not a jukebox. And I’ve owned multiple Mesa amps over the last 27 years and I just don’t get along with them.

Fair enough. The move to separate the guitar amp from the bass amp was the most important step.

This is your own damn fault, you know. You’re the one who is insisting on playing that loud, angry devil music. A Smooth Jazz trio would open up so many possibilities for you.
