IDEA: Helix Lunchbox Amp Head

Don't know how many times I've said this on forums, but I'll say it again:

Not all Class D amps are the same.

Many of us have been burned by crappy Class D amps, and there's a lot of those out there. But there are very good ones out there too. It's important that they are way over specc'd in terms of power so that there is little chance of the amplified signal being affected by distortion in the upper frequencies.
I own both the Quilter 200 and the Boss TAE. IMO the quilter is not even in the same galaxy as the Boss. It's flubby and hollow and stiff and just not fun to play through. I owned the 202 too.

The only real differentiator here is the price and the weight and if case be energy efficiency.

Loving my FR-12 right now. The power amp is Class D.
I'm gigging my FM3/GM rig through the FR12 this weekend. Don't feel like bothering taking the full dual 112 stack so direct it is \m/

How was the ""FRFR"" mode and what speakers did you use? That is the million dollar question I still have (and don't want to spend $600 used to find out)

I think all modes coloured the sound and felt weird in some way or another. Try before you buy would be my advice.
TBH playing my modeller through a RCF "FRFR" powered speaker sounded and felt more like a normal amp compared to the Quilter in a real cab.

Interesting. Thank you. Good to know.

I had the original 200, the 201 and then that 101 reverb thing that was a SDOTD here a few years back. All at reasonable prices (aka 2-3 bills). Seemed like the 202 tone block (not the Overdrive 202 which online sellers can't seem to understand the difference of) came out then they sold out/closed up shop here/wtever and they have staying at a $1 off retail for used units. Dumb.

Y'all are way, way overthinking this.

I've had a bunch of Quilters and I agree that in retrospect none of them sounded as good powering my modeller(s) with a real cab, as my current "FRFR" Class D cab does. I prefer the Quilters in their "default mode" and their own voices, rather than for amping a modeller.

I was about to give up on Class D and "FRFR" TBH, but my last spin of the dice ended up with me finally loving it.

Of course, you have to find what works for you and not me, so you may not even like what I'm hearing with my latest setup 🙇‍♂️

Well ... I would assume that the critical hardware cost between something like Pod Go and Helix Floor is probably less than 100 euro. CPU, RAM, storage etc. So they'd have to basically put the guts of an upgraded Pod Go ( that runs the full helix software ) between the V1 preamp tube and the 6l6 power section and call it a day. All in all ... 1150 should be more than reasonable.

Willing to cut Line6 some slack and accept 30W 4 6v6 for 1150 and 6l6 for 1400.
(1) This is not the one chance to get this right. There is no chance this is ever happening.

(2) a 30 watt 6v6 or 50 watt 6l6 are NOT the poweramps Helix deserves. Either of those would be behaving VERY non-linearly at drummer volumes. Heck, the 30 watt 6v6 would be non-linear enough to be puking excessive coloration all over the Helix at bedroom levels.

*BluGuitar and Quilter have entered the chat.

They're just not all the same, man. The FM9T (or HX Stomp) through the return of a Quilter ToneBlock into a Recto cab will make you pucker so much that you'll be dropping a Chapstick down the back of your pants.

Yep. We'd be talking 1000w SS at least?
