I Gotta Wonder About Fractal's, er, "Perception"

The number of parameters is absolutely not the issue. If you ignore the Advanced page, the number of parameters is not massively bigger than other modelers on the market.

Notice how Axe-Edit has little issue with any editing? That's because you see the grid at all times, can simply click a block and turn a virtual knob with your mouse. Fast and efficient. A bit annoying to hold your pick in a weird way when you operate the mouse with a guitar on your lap.

Do the same on the onboard UI and you need to do stuff like:
  • Enter vs Edit? Most of the time it's Enter..until it isn't.
  • Spam Edit to get to the block you want. The order for this is row -> column so it's terrible for any complex presets when it doesn't follow signal chain flow.
  • Alternatively cumbersomely click through the grid to find the right block.
  • The best case is when you can just hold the knobs under the screen to get to the block you want...but that only works in Home view so if you want to go amp -> reverb then it's a bit more button presses than I'd like. Ideally the holds would work from any view.
  • Then page right at least one page because the default view is the list of models in every block.
  • Then orient yourself a moment because the new view is different from the previous one. Most views in Axe-Edit are the same row of knobs, whereas onboard UI varies between row, table and list views.
  • Then you still need to move your hand away from the nav keys to the cramped knobs underneath the screen or to the big knob to adjust the param. Possibly navigate to the param if you prefer using the big knob.
Before someone brings it up, it's not about live use either. Just using it at home with all the time in the world, you will find the onboard UI just more annoying to operate regularly than it should be. If you like to tinker and experiment, all that is a lot better to do from Axe-Edit. But I'd prefer I was able to do it whether I have a computer available or not.

On modern touch screen UIs, any block is one tap away, and any parameter at most a few pages away. Even on Helix you are able to quickly get to most blocks with the capacitive footswitches. That streamlines the everyday workflow a surprising amount.

"Eh, I'm fine it", some of you will say. I guess this depends on how much you feel an oscilloscope or whatever is fine to use.

A good chunk of the Fractal operation is still the same as the first gen, just with nicer screens. The layout of the front panel is not good, and the core UI concepts haven't evolved over time, there's still features that can only be configured via Axe-Edit.

I just put up with it because it was the most capable, best sounding thing on the market. But a lot of the competition is nipping at its heels nowadays so it's no longer a clear "Fractal and everything else".

I'm hoping they get it right for the next gen, but I've given up on the current one. There's clearly no interest in fixing even low hanging fruit UI issues on the current gen. As good as Fractal sounds, I'd rather use something else that doesn't need to be tied to a computer to be user friendly.

Most of the time it's Strymon pedals and BluGuitar through real cabs, for the "no compromises in sound" option. The Hotone is a secondary option that doesn't annoy me regularly and is good enough until something better comes to market. If Neural DSP wasn't such a shitshow for the QC development, I'd probably use that.

Bless you for keeping this summary of UI issues on hand and at the ready.

I still love my FM9. I really do. But there are just ridiculous usability brain farts when using the hardware UI, and I've detailed them as well. Stuff that could actually be fixed for this generation. But the only QoL improvement I've seen across years of FM9 ownership was the Dynacab, and even that hasn't been implemented into the factory presets for the most part. I think guess Performance pages were also done after launch, but i could be wrong. But that's it. Like, how do you let the clowns at NDSP introduce more QoL improvements than you?

Cliff is a genius, and a hard-working one at that. I don't expect him to do it all, but....this paradigm where he's obsessed over sound and response fidelity while showing little interest in on-unit workflow convenience and efficiency is a problem.

The lowest of lowest hanging fruit is getting block libraries easily accessible and browsable on the current hardware, and there seems to be no acknowledgment of the lack of it or interest in changing it.

TBH, this is the very point I was wondering about since years already. I mean, pretty much everybody, including some of the most die-hard fanboys is going like "Incredible hardware and modeling quality, incredibly bad onboard editing experience". The former being all 2025-ish (or even 2030-ish), the latter being stuck pre-millenium (at least partially).
And it's not as if these things were all too tough to see improvements. It's also not that he wouldn't know about it. So why is it?

He spends time here. EDIT: But this probably isn't the best set up and I don't want him to feel baited or attacked.

I don't have an answer for why this isn't addressed here on the Fractal forum either.

My best guess is that he's decided the juice isn't worth the squeeze on current units, and he already has plans in place for next-gen (VP4 is the first baby step in that direction).

I don’t get you guys… you keep busting my balls just because I won’t buy a model yet even though I’ve bought about $4000 worth of acoustic guitars in the last two months it’s not like I don’t buy stuff. It’s just you know one day I feel like doing this the next day I feel like doing that but in the end you guys are busting my balls because I said that needs an updated better interface. I mean I think probably 90% of the people out there that are thinking about a fractal would agree so quit busting my balls.

Will say in defense of Tim...sometimes people are interested in things without actually wanting to participate. It'd be like watching cooking shows without ever trying to cook the food. Might be weird? But hey there's worse things in the world.

Flip side, I think most of us like to give each other a little crap because we get along well and it's all good fun. I mean come on, thousands of online posts for a group of people I never met in real life. A lot of stuff I post is just stream of consciousness crap and sometimes it's good for people to rip on me for wanting to buy something for like the 8th time lol.

I personally try not to rip on anyone who posts here...live and let live. I find it kind of funny that you're really into digital modelers but don't use them (or at least modern ones?). But I'm not going to get worked up over it or put you down.

...and then going to a cooking forum criticizing the recipes without ever making it, or ever even having tried or purchased (see what I did there?) any of the ingredients...

I’ll take Timbuk48 at his word that he has owned a few of the recent devices - Helix, etc. - and don’t find them enough of an improvement to justify the cost. I get that.

But if that were my perspective, I’d probably find this whole space boring enough to just not give a shit about hanging out here.

Have you spent the last decade posting on acoustic guitar forums about how overpriced everything is and/or how the GUI of one brand's guitar is substandard to the rest? If so, then I can only imagine the celebrations happening in that forum.

If not, continue wearing your athletic supporter around this joint. Actually, continue wearing your athletic supporter around this joint regardless.

Comeon someone bust his balls for saying the gui needs an update..lol. Jk as i agree with the post

SOMEON SAIID I SHOULDT PLAY AN AMBP; SOMONE SAD I SHOUD BUYE AN AMBP THATS 4 THOUSUND DOLARS

As i said i have gotten into other things lately like acoustics and loopers/drumpads and hsce been spending $$$ there but still consider a new modeler when it strikes me . I hate watching cooking shows as they are like all tv: scripted and phoney . And i cook everyday and have been into cooking since i was a kid i mean its survival to cook and its really not that hard to do.
As I’ve said many times I was jazzed for the TMP when it came out because of the gui but after using it its a waste of space and the pathetic minimalist amps and effects in it dont warrent my $ .
The hr gui i like but not the tones. Fractal guts interest me most but the gui stops me. Of well i am in no hurry as my old tech and my current meeds are good for me now in that area.
I am kindof done with acoustics aftet my yamaha tag3c arrives

My comment certainly wasn't meant to attack him or start any kinda crusade or whatever. I'm really just wondering, because if anything, FAS UI complaints are what you can read about pretty much anywhere.
And I can safely say that, among some not *that* important other issues, the UI experience is spoiling it for me. I could likely get along with the Axe FX, using remote controlled global blocks for pretty much anything (just as I do with my current setup), but as none of my plans include any rack units for the unforseeable future, the only interesting unit would be an FM9, which unfortunately doesn't feature global blocks.

I love cooking shows. Some of my favorite YT channels are cooking channels :chef
Not to derail, but I just discovered this channel. If you like history and cooking, check this one out:

I've been following him for a good while, not so much for the cooking, more for the history lessons, awesome channel!

I like watching anything on pizza. I dig Matty Mattheson (who should annoy me a bazillion times more than he does), Men With The Pots for some ASMR cooking, Sip and Fest, Mr. Make It Happen. Some of the hokey Babish stuff is good. I don't do Good Mythical Morning or anything cooking adjacent, generally speaking.
