Helix Talk

That's really strange to me. I listened to some of your stuff and your tones are usually excellent. And I have absolutely no doubt you'd get great tones out of the WhoWatt. But it's simply one of my most un-loved amps in the HX-universe. Whenever I try it, I just find it to be completely lackluster.
But then, personal taste, tone-is-in-the-fingers and all that...
Yeah, I don't know. :grin I just like it.
There is something in the midrange and top end that is pleasing. It's not overly honky. A very neutral and balanced response imo.
Granted, I think it gets better with a bit of flavor from a pedal, real or model, just to push and sweeten it up some more.

But is that cork sniffing or something only real engineers need to worry about ? Or does it also affect the quality of sound positively so it’s worth the 100 bucks? :)
Ethan Winer did a great test of these sorts of iso pads. Yes comb filtering is a thing, no you likely won’t notice or care about and either do 99.5555% of all the engineers who have made your favorite sounds. The most beneficial thing these speaker pads is putting the speakers in the right place or angling them correctly which can be done with pieces of cardboard or wood or whatever.

Makes me think how we back in the days put egg boxes on the walls for the isolations.

My buddies now have all that cool looking foam stuff from Temu lol

A used Helix Floor and backback, both in good condition, has just turned up locally for 750... I'm really tempted and have been contemplating it for the last week or so (can't believe it hasn't been snatched up yet).

I was so curious that I grabbed my HX Stomp back from our bass player who currently uses it as his only pedal (he'll get it back before our next rehearsal). It's been on firmware 2.something since I lent it to him and I haven't checked out the modeling in a long while. I've been using the Headrush Pedalboard exclusively for the last 3 years. And I've been really happy with it. There's just a few things that are hard to do with that unit - the most important one, to me, is shaping the stereo image. I'm the only guitar player in a rock band with just drums, bass, vocals and guitar. And we all rehearse/jam with headphones on. So getting a good stereo image really helps with the whole experience. The HR has great stereo sound and IMO very good modeling. It's just really hard to do things like wet/dry and dual amps with a 25 ms delay on one side to get that nice stereo spread.

So I sat down this morning with the HX Stomp, updated it to 3.8 and started to build some sounds in order to see if 1. the modeling had gotten better since 3 years ago and whether or not I could get a good stereo image. And I must say that I really enjoyed the new amp models! I think I could use the Ventoux model exclusively in all my presets and be happy. Although I also really liked the 2203, especially for cleans. We play a lot of grunge, especially something like Audioslave, and I could really see the 2203 come in handy for Tom Morellos clean to mean sounds. Also, getting a good stereo spread using either the "new" dual cabs or dual IRs was a breeze! I love how there's panning and delay controls for those blocks right there, easily accessible and sounds great. Last but not least, I had forgotten how great an overdrive can sound when you just put it on a separate path and blend in the clean signal.

So I'm slowly convincing myself to jump on the Helix Floor. Sure, I could do with the LT but I really love the scribble strips on my HR and would be sad to lose them. I would already have to say goodbye to a great UI and fairly responsive touch screen - letting go of scribble strips would be too much. I just can't figure out if it's a stupid time to switch. I'm not an early adopter so even if Line 6 announces a new flagship floor modeler tomorrow, I wouldn't be jumping on board for at least a couple of years until everything is up to par, usability wise, with everything else out there. Besides, it would probably be priced around twice of what a used Floor would cost me, so I probably wouldn't feel it was worth it either.

And before you ask: I will most likely never buy a Fractal modeler. They're just too expensive IMO over here in Europe (we pay about 50% more than in the US) and even though I travel to the States from time to time, I feel like I would need more local support than Fractal could offer. And then there's of course the matter of the UI which I just don't think I'd want to deal with. I don't want to be tethered to a screen for every little editing I need to do and from what I've seen, the onboard UI is not for me.

I can only tell that I bought my Helix in May 2017, and it's been the best purchase decision I made, apart from guitars.
And I used many different things in the past (many less expensive multi-fx and modelers including Roland VG-8, and some amps and cabs).
After getting the Helix I have never bought any pedal any longer (but I changed some full range monitors till I got some better stuff), and now I'm not interested in any real amp, as well as I stopped buying, building and modding pedals...

Do it! Helix floor cannot be beat

First Helix + Katana Power Amp show last Friday. Went over smoothly, heaps of fun were had. 🤟😎🥂🔥

Unfortunately, the only full song someone recorded I played with unpotted vintage humbuckers. Sounded cool, but dat squeal tho...

Killer shit!

I just got my Helix Floor in 2 days ago, still learning my way around the beast. How are you going into the Katana? Poweramp In with no IR/Cab? I've got a MKII 100w Artist and I'm still trying to carve out a decent sound with the Helix. On another note, my Katana sounds great on it's own, great little amp and way lighter than my 6505+ Half lol.

Cool location. Astounding, that a bricklayered place like that sounds that... okay.
Yeah, it wasn't as bad as I expected (cheap AF old and half-broken PA, but they got it to work). Later during the set the sub woofers went to their knees and started cutting out, supposedly due to the volume levels of our little ensemble. 😁

Lots of smaller/indie venues in Vienna AT looks and sounds similar, since most older buildings downtown have that kind of basement, and many of them are connected if you have a "master key" (and the owners didn't change the locks at some point). Probably a central EU thing.

Thanks much!

My kitchen-sink Helix preset runs a spring reverb after the amp block, then splits two ways:

1) mono 1/4 out into Katana power amp input

2) All stereo: Dual Cab block -> Legacy Tile (very slightly, to add depth) -> Stereo Widener -> dual XLR out to FOH

This way everybody is happy, no mic needed, and I can control the amp volume without getting into a fistfight with the tech 😂

The video might not do it justice, but several random strangers made compliments about my guitar sound afterwards - always nice to get!

This is how I came to this question and I am sorry I should have elaborated a bit more but my thought process had not formed fully around it . Perhaps it has to do with Fletcher Munson.

I did not notice that much difference in the amps Fender Deluxe, Super reverb and honestly sure a bit of difference in AC30 and Marshall but not shockingly. A Super might have a bit more darkness … a deluxe a bit more bright. If I pick a really different amp compared to these .. yes, it becomes more distinguishable.

Also with the IRs that I now have I wouldn’t say I notice that much difference between a M65 Cream IR and a Fender Deluxe IR. And zero in the mixes.

And I am sure there is a difference. But I don’t hear it as super different from each other.

That’s when I thought perhaps I am just playing on to low volumes to really notice a big difference.

I guess I am around 60-75 Db mostly when I play.
