Helix Talk

would it work and be worth it to buy Helix Nativ, get a cheap DAW… and with that more DSP options??

Or is a good DAW needed and is it a super steep learning curve?

I am from the cool edit days… but I know people who use Logic , Cubase etc

Helix Native is always a good purchase. For DAW you can try Reaper, which is free, but I would recommend Studio One.

Just listened to Leon's 3.8 review. Great tones and playing as always.

The new Amps aren't for me. Way to high gain for me - but I've messed with them and they sound pretty f%cking incredible and super fun to play.

What got me though was a comment in the comments list. It read:-

" Tonally I’m hearing a lot of high end fizz on these models, a lot of “KCCCCHHHHHHHHH” sizzle. The Axe and QC tones are definitely a step above the Hemix. "

Apparently Line 6 have released a "Hemix" ;)

..... obviously each to their own. %100 no problems there. But f%ck me, it just felt like an auto-reflex-pre-determined-shit-bagging comment - the same sort of thing people were posting from Day 1. I would have thought it was abundantly clear to anyone with ears that the only thing the same from the Helix of 2015 to that of 2024, is the physical box and name.

Don't know why it pissed me off (?). Comments like these are just so freaking redundant yet people still feel the need to throw shit on stuff for reasons I cant fathom.

Yeah weird
The Bogner XTC is really good the blue and red channels probably my fav amp in Helix now and with all the controls I think I like it a bit more that Fractals although they are different amps
Line6 101b , Fractal 20th anniversary

I loved Cool Edit!
And when I started using DAWs my firsts steps were with Sony Acid, then Cubase, Cakewalk, then Mixcraft. And I stopped with it, and I still use Mixcraft following its new versions. It was - imho - a little easier.
Yes, there's an important learning curve with any DAW. Just my suggestion: choose one that has several videos with examples and instructions (so that you can start quickly using it) and a good forum for exchanging questions and information with other users. And then invest some time in practicing what you've chosen. In the end, the power of any software depends a lot on our skill and knowledge of its potential.

Cockos Reaper, Ableton Live Standard, Cubase Artist are also popular choices, but I'd really suggest to try Reaper and Mixcraft Pro. They both have trial versions (well, in case of Reaper the trial period is even a little different...).

I think people just repeat what they’ve read before. It sucks because it stopped me from trying helix for a long time, the internet voices convinced me it sounds bad, but it turned out to be way better than I hoped. Maybe it’s a good thing I started at 3.7.

The bogner blue does a great cleanish to mid gain thing, definitely not high gain only. Like with every other model I play it through the 1x12 open cast cab with the sm7b. I was really excited about the super reverb but I have spent more time playing the bogner blue so far. I agree on the bogner red and the EVH models though, too much gain for me.

Did you check the Super Reverb?

Also, is this high gain?

And this is with pretty high Drive and Master settings already.

That is what happens with all the stuff you can read online. I thought I really wanted a katana because of online. Man I hated that thing

But yes, I love the amp model too.

That's really strange to me. I listened to some of your stuff and your tones are usually excellent. And I have absolutely no doubt you'd get great tones out of the WhoWatt. But it's simply one of my most un-loved amps in the HX-universe. Whenever I try it, I just find it to be completely lackluster.
But then, personal taste, tone-is-in-the-fingers and all that...
