Helix 3.7: The Freeman Update

Spent quite a bit more time with it over the last few days.

2203 is awesome, but the voltage ended up edging it out for me for my primary patch. Voltage has a note decay that I like better (aggressive bright caps create this kind of trashy decay when you roll the volume knob down on the guitar that bugs me). Voltage has that same growl that I noticed in the 2203 that my former plexi patch was missing. Also cool, that boost in the voltage is effectively like having a drive pedal built in, I put it on a switch just like an OD and saved the dsp. Interestingly the boost doesn’t change the overall volume of the model much when you switch it in which is nice for the way I’m using it.

The nobels sounds amazing in front of a bright fender clean model, which is awesome because hardly anything else does…

Messed around with the feedbacker and was able to get it pretty natural by backing the gain down to around 3 and dropping the release time, the litmus test for me was finding the place where I could get it to handle a little vibrato. I don’t have enough dsp to run it in my main patch but I’m sure I’ll pull it out in places.

Bloom verb didn’t do it for me, has that same metallic sound that I hear in dynamic hall. I can’t unhear it…

If you can use a soldering iron take a look at the Odr1 project on Aionfx website. He used the bass control from a timmy so can dial in how much bass you want and don't have to reply on a preset amount. It's a really useful feature.

I like that the HX Prize is bassy because my solo snap with more amp gain and treble, kind of thins things out a little. The prize makes sure it's fat and juicy. I do agree though that when used by itself as a gain pedal the bass cut switch cuts too much bass.

I was stuck on the Dripman amp last night for a while, putting together some presets. Using it with decent breakup tone and I've setup a dual cab using 2 of the tweed 4x10, SM57 and 414, slightly spread out. Sounds great with a lot of the drives but I've mainly used the 808 and valve driver for now -- separate or together. Low mix & feedback dotted 1/16 delay up the middle and a stereo plate verb with decent spread to finish out.
I have a treble bleed on my guitar volume so getting everything from glassy cleans to full-on heavy gain.
Really enjoying it.

With an amp that can take the extra low end I tend to leave the control up for my strat and tele then knock it back a bit for humbuckers. Into a smaller wattage amp that can't take all the extra lows without flubbing out it's nice to be able to cut just what you need rather than a preset amount.

I noticed this too. Would have made more sense to just have a bass cut level control, although it still sounds great.

Apologies if this was already posted, but this is an A/B of a real Nobels ODR-1 vs. the Helix model. Ridiculously close. Line 6's complement of pedal models is unmatched by any of its competitors, IMO.

I keep thinking about getting an HX Stomp again for the pedal models. Pedals are Fractal’s weak link, especially the drives imho. They’re mostly uninspiring and selection is limited (a lot are just TS variants). I really hope Cliff does a big drive pedal update like he did with reverbs.

I love the helix drives. The fuzzes alone are worth it
