Even though wars are started by politicians, condemning war and advocating for peace is not a political thing. It is a natural expression of humanity. A sign of a kind heart.
Thanks very much for your thoughtfulness. I got too emotional to find the right wording, but you expressed the feeling much better.
My concern is that you hear apologists for fascism casually asserting the same playbook as Nazis did in the '30s. When I was growing up, no one would tolerate that in polite conversation, but now it's become mainstream serious discussion, with deference to both sides, and that is deeply frightening.
Last night my wife and I were watching the 1943 film Hangmen Also Die!, by Fritz Lang, a depiction of Nazi occupation of Czechoslovakia, and the methods portrayed are just a few steps from what we're experiencing today.
I've read so much politics on this forum I'll indulge myself with the same birth others have been granted here. This forum and the Fractal Forum are the only social media with which I interact in this way, where I even care about adding at all to conversations. As much as I love having the flagship Fractal product and feeling it truly is the best of the best, as much niche information as I've learned and tried my best to repay there, I'm certainly not married to the Fractal Forum. I lurked there for a long time before joining, and even as a lurker I saw it as disproportionately filled with assholes; on the other hand, it's still a great wellspring of specialized knowledge, and for all the dickheads, I've had a great many interactions with people who act thoughtfully and decently.
There may be something I'm missing, which is my sincere hope, but the only logic I can find for that thread being deleted is that the mods either do not respect the victims of the war crimes or worse, that they are acting as apologists for them: There were, I believe two members who were implying pro-Putin sentiment, but rather than publicly censoring just that disgusting rhetoric, the entire thread is gone,
making equivocal the overwhelming well wishing and those few pieces of shit who would both-sides the worst of humanity.
These are just gear forums, but there's a level of basic fucking humanity that you've got to respect in any context. I agree that no unrelated forum should get into meat and potatoes policy arguments as if this were Twitter, but a fellow Fractal user is
literally the victim of a fucking war crime. If that doesn't transcend the idea of political debate, where does basic respect for humanity itself lie?
