Dream Theater Megathread NEW SONG POSTED!!!!!

I heard a 15 second snippet last week of the chorus, I’ll wait until I’m at home with a bong and good speakers to dig into the whole thing. I know the chorus had me lookin’ at my ipad a little sideways. :rofl

1:44 - Sounds like As I Am
2:46 - What in the fuck is this chorus? Am I still listening to the same song?
4:48 - Bridge is weak
5:14 - Solo sounds like a ripoff of Untethered Angel
5:44 Oh look, a unison keyboard/guitar finger exercise! That’s never been done before.

This song is all over the place. Like the other two, completely forgettable. And I say this as a super fan of nearly four decades. Do better Dream Theater.

So far, that’s 3 turds out of 8 tracks.

💿💩💩💿💩💿💿💿

Not hating. Just saying.

Sometimes I feel like the songwriting approach of DT---where the music gets all worked up
apart from the singer and then James has to try and slap a compelling vocal/melody
on top of pre-existing and determined track---is maybe not always the best approach to
a compelling end result.

Just a thought. :idk

At 4:36 in that tune, during the divorce period I was driving home from work one day and that section came in like a giant, cathartic battering ram and I just lost it. Totally one of those “this is going to happen whether you like it or not because you need it” sessions.

That was the first album they’d put out in quite a while where it actually sounds like they just had a good time writing in the room together, which is exactly how they wrote it.

Oh yeah, I definitely feel that.

Same thing happened to me, but the song was Through Her Eyes. Same situation.

Didn't Van Halen write/jam together as a band, though?

I saw a neat fact the other day about Van Halen III (the Cherone album), where
the Producer (Mike Post) was talking about Edward's state of mind at the time
they were working on the Album. He mentioned that Edward wanted total creative
control without having to defer to, or work with a "lead singer."

How'd that work out?

I’m reading the comments of the video and many are praising the fact that it has many references to previous songs.

I guess I’m just not into the fan service thing and expected Portnoy’s return to spark something new and original.

Oh well, at least they’ll be playing a lot of classics at the upcoming show. 🫤
