Dream Theater Megathread NEW SONG POSTED!!!!!

Didn't Van Halen write/jam together as a band, though?
I thought I read something that the brothers wrote the songs together, then vocals were added.
I saw a neat fact the other day about Van Halen III (the Cherone album), where
the Producer (Mike Post) was talking about Edward's state of mind at the time
they were working on the Album. He mentioned that Edward wanted total creative
control without having to defer to, or work with a "lead singer."

How'd that work out?
Imo, Gary did a great job, but it wasn't a good fit. He is a helluva front man. I saw Extreme live at Hammerjacks back in the day, and he ruled that stage. Pretty much how he did with the VH shows that I've watched.

He's a killer front man. I saw Michael Anthony talking about that Tour and
how stoked he was to do the shows every night because Gary was willing to
do Van Hagar and Van Roth songs.... unlike Sammy who refused to do a lot
of the DLR stuff.

Michael also mentioned the recording of the album was horrific---and that Eddie
was more of a control freak than he had ever been. He also stopped himself
before going into more details. :idk

Yeah I've had mine for a few months now, I think. DC show in March. I hope I get more excited as the date gets closer though. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I’ve got tickets for a March show as well. I haven’t viewed any set lists or YouTube videos of the current tour (just listened to the tracks from the new album), so everything should be a surprise.

I haven't felt the desire to listen to the new song since the couple times the day it was released. :(
I guess I was just really trying to like it. I mean it's the best of the 3 imo, but..., the novelty wore right off. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I think I may just have to agree with your assessment.
Or it could just be me... :idk

I feel you. I guess I just thought that with Portnoy’s return, they would just knock it out of the park and bring something completely new to the table.

The majority of comments on their new videos on YouTube are the polar opposite, so I guess I’m in the minority.

Perhaps they’re saving the best for last?

Giving Midnight Messiah another listen, and the very beginning reminds me of the 'spoken word' part of Repentance (Systematic Chaos), complete with Portnoy playing the same grace notes on the snare. (Might be the same exact pattern entirely. Not sure.)

It can be hard to come up with new ideas...

I think they should each pick 5 bands they're never listened to much, and dig into them.

After the key/guitar unison, I would've liked if they'd gone back and restated the opening. I heard that on the first listen also.

No Florida dates as of yet, but I'll definitely make the drive to Orlando if they don't come down here.

The only time I've heard all of "Midnight Messiah" was when watching this earlier-

I didn't pay attention to the song much and said "Oh yeah, this is the new one!" probably 4x while watching that video. :rofl

I'm just waiting for the full album so I can hear it in the context of that, but I'm glad I saw the Samus vid of him reacting to "Night Terror", I just found myself appreciating a new DT song for different reasons I was anticipating appreciating it.

Loved that video of Brandon learning the new track. I definitely appreciate the song more when really analysing it like that.
Slightly related, was this other Drumeo video of Mike "learning" a Taylor Swift song posted yet? It's hilarious. :rofl

edit: removed video, it was indeed posted two pages back. lol

Just appreciating Mike's t-shirt- EJ's Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy album cover! And yeah, the TF vid was posted somewhere, maybe higher up here.
