Dream Theater Megathread NEW SONG POSTED!!!!!

James will always sound good on albums because they know how to Milli Vanilli him. Song is ok, I hear moments recycled from Home & the title cut of Sustematic Chaos.

Everyone is raving about the guitar solo but I don’t get it because it’s so out of place for the vibe of the song. It’s like Petrucci’s version of throwing in a ragtime jig.

I'm liking this one a lot!
Not a huge fan of the vocal lines, though but everything else is great. I hear a lot of six degrees.

I love how both singles have slightly stylistic differences compared to the usual DT stuff. Not big differences and not everywhere but they sound kind of fresh-ish to me.

We don't need to talk about the drumming, don't we? :love

I like the solo. :idk

I wonder how DT's songs would be different if James were involved in the writing
at the outset. He's always kind of been the afterthought in the band, and has to
wedge something into all the Systematic Chaos and Six Degrees Of Turbulence
going on.

Ok, I just gotta say it, :sofaand I wouldn't be surprised at all if others here are thinking the same thing, but don't wanna be "that guy"- Both of these songs are lame. It's far from the DT that made me want to listen to a new song over and over. The odd time signatures are just that, odd, with not much real musicality to them. The riffs also don't have a whole lot of depth.

And as far as the live shows go, I've been watching their setlists, and they haven't changed a single song yet, like they used to do when they toured "An Evening With" shows, but I'll hold off and see if maybe they'll switch things up when in the US, and the dates aren't so far apart. Portnoy himself used to say they did that so fans that go to multiple shows could see different songs played. So we'll see...

And why are they doing 4 songs from SFAM, yet only ONE from when MM was the drummer?? They just did a SFAM tour 4 years ago! :facepalm

Octavarium is a snoozefest compared to several other epics like In The Presence of Enemies, and ffs, kill PMU. No real DT fan will care!

All IMHO, YMWV, yadda yadda.

I am not at all excited about going to see them. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I really hope the best is yet to come when the album gets released.

Signed,
One of the most hardcore Dream Theater fans out there!

@TSJMajesty you bring an interesting point of view that shows us how each one of us hear, feel and breath music in a unique way.

I honestly disliked every DT record after Octavarium (and even octavarium is a mixed bag for me) I tired hard to like them with no luck.

I stared following DT in 1992 with Images and Words and they've been in my top 10 since then.
After octavarium I felt like the band was just repeating itself over and over, too many songs felt like a work of cut and paste of sections and ideas instead of an organic composition. There was no magic in the music for me anymore.
The drummer change made things even worse to my ears.

I've haven't seen them live since 2004.

Just hearing Portnoy drumming (and his voice) puts a smile on my face.

I do like the album cover though…

What's funny is the backlash on Reddit about the use of AI art, people straight up going on rampages, multiple threads with hundreds of posts of people bitching about it as if they just started playing pop music, to the point many are hyperfixated on it, fuckin' crazy.

Longtime Dream Theater fan here too and I’m going to have to agree. Both singles just come off as medleys of previously released songs. Zero replay value for me. I really hope the rest of the album changes my mind.

Seriously, I think it is like a tube amp----you need to get that volume up to really
feel the juice getting into your veins. :rawk

I am hearing so many cool nuances----including some cool Portnoy backing vocals
and harmonies on "A Broken Man." :chef

I don't know..., I think that's like saying, "Maybe you need a different wine with that steak." I can pretty much tell from the first bite.

I wasn't being completely honest with what I wrote about that first song. I guess I was just trying hard to like it and not be negative.

And yes, I'm comparing these 2 songs with lots of other stuff. I've been playing/listening to for the past month or so...

In The Presence of Enemies
Scarred
In The Name of God
Ministry of Lost Souls
The Enemy Inside (there's a song to listen to loud)
On The Backs of Angels
Breaking All Illusions
Home
Fatal Tragedy
Overture 1928
Stream of Consciousness
Never Enough
Just Let Me Breathe

and these 2 songs don't measure up, in my view.

I had the same feeling with a few tracks on their last album too. There's just something..., missing. Idk... :idk

How can we honestly compare songs we have been intimate with and loved for years to songs we have heard once??

That doesn't even seem like a fair fight, in my book. :idk

Look at me defending DT, and earlier this week defending Giboogie and the IIC+. :bonk

You are right, Tom. Something is missing.

The Inverted Universe is upon us. :rofl
OK, Imma wax philosophic here for a minute...

Neither of us are "right", or "wrong." It's just tastes.

I think In The Presence of Enemies is an absolute MASTERPIECE of musicality and talent. But I have tried turning friends onto that song, even going so far as to point out certain sections and try to describe why I think they are amazing, yet I get this 'deer-in-the-headlights' look. So I stop.

Giboogie
:rofl
