Dream Theater Megathread NEW SONG POSTED!!!!!

I mean, would it be that much of a stretch, that most all DT fans seeing them on this tour would rather they allot that time to some other song?

I really think everyone thinks they have to play PMU, because everyone thinks they have to play PMU.

I'll be happy with whatever they play, as long as they don't change any keys the songs were recorded in.

Well, that, and by the time March comes along, please play some new songs FFS!

I wouldn't be at all surprised if that set list changes a bunch by the time they come to the US. But right now, it's pretty damn good.

Except for Pull Me Under!!

I was surprised to see PMU on there, too. There’s a couple on that list I’d be fine not hearing, but they covered a good amount of ground.

The biggest thing of importance happened; they’re definitely not playing to a click!

Also, the whole 40th Anniversary tour aspect might be a reason they have it on the set. It IS their claim to fame and all. They’ve skipped it plenty of times in the past.

First time I saw them for that Home For The Holidays Show there were signs posted saying “If you’re here to hear “Metropoli” or “Pull Me Under” you’re going to be disappointed! Tonight’s show will be covers and rarities!”

I went through Distance Over Time last night, and I'm really beginning to like that album a lot!

And being the huge DT fan I am, I still have songs of their's I've never heard.

I’ve only heard the first 15-20 mins of The Astonishing. I refuse to listen to that whole album. I know I’ve heard all the Mangini albums except that one, but if I heard them now it’d be like listening to entirely new albums.

I have tried...., a few times. No. Just, no.

I think I did punish myself by letting it play all the way through, once, while I was focused on other stuff.

Same here. I've listened to most of the Mangini albums only one time through but skipping some songs halfway through. Consider myself a big fan, saw them live 9 times between 2002 and 2008 and saw some special shows like WDADU anniversary show but lost interest in the MM years. So happy Portnoy is back. And hope the rest of the album feels fresher and newer than Night Terror.
Regardless, I still try to see them when they come through California next year. Setlist is looking great.
Hopefully Labrie will be warmed up by the end of the European leg!

Metropolis PT1
Overture 1928
Strange Deja Vu
The Mirror
Panic Attack
Barstool Warrior
Hollow Years (w/ bebop outro….fucking Ruddess)
Constant Motion
As I Am
Night Terrors
This Is The Life
Under A Glass Moon
Vacant
Stream Of Consciousness
Octavarium
Home
Spirit Carries On
Pull Me Under

I’d be pretty happy with that!

I think this is going to be another rough tour for LaBrie. Not off to a great start here. He does sound better later in the set. His choices in changing things up will always perplex me. Seems he’d be better off just saying “I’m not going to hit a single high note in these songs so I can save it for these others”, instead he mixes it up and half the time he sounds taxed even when he’s singing the ‘easier’ way.

OMFG! I know how precious mental health can be, and how tenuous it is with the
ever present Internet trolling of this, that, and the other thing.... but how.... how can
they continue to take the stage with that guy fronting the band?
:facepalm

Are they bound by law? Blood oath? Does he have a tell all he has revealed to them about
their freaky-ass Prog fetishes with male groupies?

Seriously. This is and will continue to be one of the great headscratchers for me. Those guys
are too accomplished and know too much to continue to trot out on the stage with him
as their singer without some kind guarantee (or misplaced loyalty) being in play?

Sorry, James. It's not personal. It's performance based. I get judged on my work every
mother fucking day. :pitchforks

And he's such a cool dude!

While we were in line at the 930 Club back on SFAM, he came over and started discussing the plot of the album with us, and revealed that the therapist had also been reincarnated. He was like, "So...., think about it. The brother..., "open your eyes Nicholas..."?"

Very cool.

But yeah, I agree completely.

After watching the O2 clips, I'm not nearly as excited about seeing them in March. Plus, it's near the end of the tour.

Sadly, James is long way from what he used to be. I've watched some other clips and as drew says, he gets better. But still... It's sad for singers that the voice goes like that.

It almost seems like he doesn't have a plan for the melodies and is just winging it when he deviates from the original notes. Which is not working very well. He should plan out and practice stuff that works, I think it would sound much better.

But I am still psyched to see them together again, and will be rooting for James to get at least tolerable, lol.

It's got to be a miserable experience for James. It can't be fun getting up there, knowing what kind of show you're going to pull off and wanting to do the best he can. The pressure has got to be intense. Hell, Bon Jovi put out a whole documentary covering his experience with this stuff.

It's been funny seeing the non-musicians give their take on how this should be handled, "Everyone in the band can just push a button and tune down for him, this isn't fair to James to keep playing the songs in the original keys" :rofl

I really feel bad for LaBrie, it has to really tough physically and mentally.

My bet is that he will retire after this tour. They'll celebrate their reunion for few months and then he'll quit.

I can't imagine him keep on doing this again.
His voice can't keep up with the band, a band that is still perfect.
I can't imagine him taking all the shit he's taking online once more.

I also bet that the band has James super low in the monitor mix because you can't enjoy your performance with a singer in that condition.

On the website, they just posted a pic from the first show at the O2 Arena, and you can see a Fractal FC-12 over on Myung's side.
Is this new for him? His floor setup had more than this in the past, but now it's only the FC, what looks like an EV-1, and some other pedal, maybe a page turner for his tablet.

I know he uses Fractal, but I could've sworn he was an RJM user.
