Brent Hinds no longer in Mastodon

They should go total left field and bring Ian Thornley into the band.

Imagine instead of Brent’s Caveman Ozzy vocals you get Cornell/Plant. He could definitely handle all the guitar parts, he gets plenty heavy in Big Wreck and his solo stuff, I could non-ironically see him taking the band to a whole different plateau.

25 years is a great run. thanks for all the great music.

that being said if they replace him they should start a new band name. i am not a fan of bands that replace key members and keep rolling with the same name. the band is not the same anymore.

Yeah but the name is a brand that has way more recognition, marketability, etc. Takes years to build that, I wouldn't expect them just to drop it.

im not disputing that at all. i just find it disingenuous and obviously more for profit like you mentioned than being about the music which is fine if thats the goal.

you see those zombie bands out there still touring with no original members no new material... its just a bad look. not saying thats what would happen here i'd just prefer to start fresh when an original member leaves but its not my band so not my call.

unfortunately, I totally agree. They’ve had a solid run, and managed to keep a consistent line up for it which doesn’t happen often. I LOVE Mastodon but I’d rather they call it something else and start it fresh than try to replace Brent. The thing I loved about Mastodon was the fact they avoided being out and out metal and brought in the other influences. Even if they continue with that mindset, someone new to the band contributing is going to sound totally different.

I also have no real issue with bands breaking up, and often prefer it if it protects their legacy. The Beatles and The Smiths are 2 of my favourite bands and neither of them lasted a decade.

And let the gatekeeping commence in 3... 2... and .... 1....

Oh man. Mastodon seems to be portraying this as an amicable split----
that this was mutual and the band wanted him gone, and he wanted to be gone. :idk

Next show is in April and they are booked solid to tour all Summer.

This may all be tied to the B Hinds and Matt Pike doing a project together?

Maybe that is finally coming to fruition?

Could be a win for everyone.

Also, the B Hinds quote about "hating Metal" is from 2015, and not a direct
quote about parting ways with Mastodon.

Next show is actually tonight, at Tool’s Hooker With A Penis Fest in the Bahamas or some shit. It was like $4K a ticket. :rofl

Mastodon was an opening act for a show I'm seeing in May. Wasn't really my thing but now I'm interested to see what happens 😂

Brent’s in a bunch of small local bands, there’s always people in the Mastodon FB group posting pics of him in tiny ass Atlanta clubs tearing it up. He still jumps in a van and does small tours between Mastodon shit. He prefers it that way instead of the big rock tour thing.

I think Brent just really hates the big rock band aspect of it all, while Bill and Brann are doing all they can to push the band as far as it’ll go. Those guys joined the Grammy committee a few years back, no surprise how Mastodon started getting Grammy noms. They’re getting ready to start the machine back up with writing new music and they’ve barely had time off since their last album. It’s been a few weeks home at a time then another tour or string of festival dates.

Meanwhile, Brent’s contributed less and less with each album and just doing his thing over the top of what Bill and Brann write. So if he’s not even writing music for the band and hates touring, there’s not a whole lot left to love about the situation. If the other guys are trying to push this thing as far as it’ll go and the odd one out wants to go in the complete opposite direction, it makes sense to split, as unfortunate as it is.

Whoa! My only question is, how did you know about this? :idk

I also don't blame Brent one bit now for parting ways.

My bad, the show is actually tonight.

This was announced about 3 months ago, I don't think Tool had anything to actually do with it but it was something a promoter put together and shopped it to bands. Tickets were something like $2700, you couldn't get single-day passes and it originally promised 2 unique sets from Tool. Apparently they came out last night, repeated half the set from the previous night and Maynard asked the audience "How many were here last night?", either trolling the audience, knowing damn well single-day tickets weren't available, or completely clueless as to how the event worked. Either way, they pissed off a lot of people that forked over literal thousands to go see this destination/vacation show. They aren't even closing the festival out, I think Mastodon is.

Brent re-posted something saying "No Brent, No Mastodon" and left a single comment under it, "MastodonE". He's been posting from home, so it's unlikely he'll be there for tonight's set. His posts don't allude to a mutual agreement, that's for sure. I've read a TON of stores in the last 48 hours from people who were hanging out after the show and almost all of them go "Brent was drunk as a motherfucker, yelling about something until Brann came and calmed him down" Almost every story ends with Brann being the adult in the room to Brent's drunken antics.

I'm curious if this was a "Brent, if you want to be in Mastodon you need to get some professional help. That's the only way you can stay in this band" and Brent saying "Fuck you" was the "mutual agreement" that Brent would no longer play in the band. Or if it was a Dream Theater situation where Brent felt they wouldn't continue without him and the band said "Uh....guess again"

Man. I bet you are on the money. History is history, and demons are real, and often
come back if we don't learn how to domesticate them so we can function responsibly
with others. :hugitout

I kind of felt like this was about the band not being able to move forward with someone
who is stuck.... if you know what I mean. That still sucks. I hope Brent gets to where he
can thrive----and not be another tragic tale in Rock's litany of tragic tales. :idk

That statement sounded more like a “get the fuck outta here” written in more flowery language to me. Probably been fairly miserable for both sides for a while and making an exit is just easier for everyone.

They’re old enough and big enough that it’s probably quite demanding to be working at that level. Mastodon are pretty ambitious with being a huge successful stadium band and that surely must take its toll, especially a few decades in.

Saw some posts today about Brann having a black eye….

I like you Orv, but that is your most off-the-wall and clueless comment on this Forum.

Love,
Me

:rofl
It really isn't. They've got enough money. Every penny the rock and metal scene gives to Tool, Sabbath, Maiden, Linkin Park, AC/DC, Deftones, and so on and so forth.... every penny you give them is a penny robbed from the next and upcoming thing.
