Brent Hinds no longer in Mastodon

"I never really liked heavy metal in the first place. I came from Alabama playing country music, surf rock, rockabilly, and stuff like that. I just went through a phase in my 20s where I thought it was rebellious to play heavy metal. And then I met Brann [Dailor, Mastodon drummer] and Bill [Kelliher], and they were really, really, really into heavy metal. And ever since then, I’ve been trying to get Mastodon to not be such a heavy metal band, because I fucking hate heavy metal, and I don’t want to be in a heavy metal band.
 
What the fuck…..

Part of me isn’t surprised, he’s not a fan of fame and tends to wrestle with the whole successful band thing. He barely wrote for the last couple of albums and just sprinkled his thing on top of what Bill and Brann came up with.

But this fucking sucks. The dude is a huge part of that band and I don’t know of a single player that does what he does.

Yeah always thought he'd be a bit of a trip to deal with just from how he comes off. But what he adds to the equation is irreplaceable imo.

I am bummed. But I also bet it has to be a relief to the other 3. Now
they can move on instead of dragging the albatross that I am guessing
Mr. Hinds had become.

I’m more bummed about this than I was Portnoy leaving Dream Theater. I’ve never had something happen to a favorite band while they’ve actively been my favorite band, I had already moved passed DT when Portnoy quit so it was more of a shock than any sadness, but this is a bummer, man.

At the end of the day, these decisions are quality of life decisions, by anyone involved who had to make them, and I can’t fault anyone for improving their quality of life.
 
Brent's decisions in the past have not always been... shall we say... ideal. :stirthepot

I hope the best for all involved. It's a HUGE blow to the band----but sometimes
thinks work out---and the Reunion Date is mostly guaranteed, too. Provided Brent
doesn't Face Tattoo himself to death first. :idk

I like Mastodon, but not enough to care about this that much.

However, that seems like a very douchey parting statement for him to make.
