Boss FS-5U with SDE-3000D - HELP!

I'm following the instructions for setup but it ain't working.

The 5U polarity is correct and it's connected via a mono 1/4 cable to the Control 2 input.

Then I tried both control-1 and control-2 set to bpntap:

But the pedal just increments CTL numbers on the display and there's no impact on the tempo at all.

Weird that there's no SAVE or WRITE step and/or instruction about it. Any help would be appreciated.

There's only one mention of the word in the manual.

I've tried the FS-5U polarity switch in both positions as a sanity check - no difference.
