Anyone else getting sick of GAS?

Honestly , I come here lately mostly for the memes comments and good vibe.
I think anything that inspires someone to pick up the guitar and spend some time playing instead of endlessly watching you tube video or trying to find the right IR is a good product

In the short time I have been playing the NDSP plug-ins that one of the biggest appeals , it’s how quick I can get a sound , sometimes limitations can be a good thing , if I only have 4 parameters on the delay and biggest decision is whether you want ping pong on or off
It’s kind of liberating

There will always be gas
There will always be is the grass greener over there but after a certain amount of flipping you realize
your back where you started , because we like a comfort zone and generally find the way back to the sounds that inspired us in the first place or a variation of them

@Sedaxel Good point - I should not have said "seriously". I was indeed suprised... but it does sound sarcastic to use that word and sarcasm could also be interpreted as leaning to the aggressive questioning side of things.

Like you, I also own a Nano. Great little device. I'm interested in all gear, really. Of course I do enjoy my Axe-Fx, but I've been sat on the floor playing with the Nano this morning. That was definitely a GAS purchase, but it paid off; no regrets there! Love the portability.

And also, like you, I do find it frustrating that there is such a plethora of digital MI devices out there for guitar, but none of them offer the goldilocks feature set. This x 1000.

Yup. :beer

Listen to music. Play and make music. Fuck all the other nonsense not even remotely related
to those two things. :hmm

They lived happily ever after. :hugitout

The end.
I been sayin' it for years.

:cop

This!

I´m always writing long explanations while it can be said so easily instead... :rofl

My GAS these days is for mixing software. I definitely have a few asks for the Helix, but I haven’t had to talk myself down from new equipment in a while.

I don’t get watching YouTube stuff that makes you miserable. GAS I get, but continuing to watch shitty YouTube infomercial channels you don’t like? Don’t get it.

Digital GAS - meh.

Guitar GAS? Burning hot and heavy and I love it!!! Give me all the guitars!!!!!!!

My GAS tendencies used to be way worse. Like, at one point I was buying a pedal every other week, and I was flipping amps constantly, then coming back to them realizing that I should never have sold them.

Amp-wise, I'm in a great place. I have a bunch and I dig them all. No reason to sell any of them in all honesty. I got the Mark V recently, and no doubt next year I'll get another amp.

Modeller-wise, I'm not really that arsed. I have Helix, I have Axe3, I have Quad Cortex. I use them, but lately it has been sparingly. Why do I need three top tier modellers? I don't. I barely need one to be honest! But I have them all the same. Will I keep them all? I don't know man, I don't know. The Axe3 is pissing me off philosophically at the moment, coz I know it can do EVERYTHING.... but I just don't like using it as much as a real amp and a few stompos. I'm sure the feeling will pass. I'm not gonna sell it. More likely to sell the Helix or the QC.

Pedals, I actually don't have that many, compared to even a year or two ago. I think I had something like 30 odd pedals at one point. Now I've got about 10.

Guitars are actually not something I hugely GAS for, being a lefty. I've got two Les Paul's - the ObG and the Tokai - and a Stingray bass, and a Gibson acoustic. Kinda does the job for me really. I got rid of the strat and the Evertune EC to get the Mark V. Don't regret it one bit!

I dunno.. it comes and goes, and I've never really been that bothered by it. What the hell else am I supposed to spend money on?? The kids??? Sod that!!

Next year will probably be expanding my pedal collection. But not because I feel I NEED anything. I really don't need anything else to be able to make music; and I do still make music, despite TNBD being wrapped up.

I've got my solo project called Sloganyear and then two bands; Summerisle, and 'Ash City' (WIP name!) - those are going to keep me busy next year and hopefully I'll get some music released!

the relentless advertising is exhausting and kind of numbs the excitement for everything.

Factor in a load of people in youtube getting a load of freebies and pretending to be excited for 5 minutes before moving onto the next thing they don’t actually care about, and it makes me not care in turn.

I don’t think most gear needs to be as important or amazing as companies want us to believe. The best gear I have is largely boring stuff that just does what I want it to reliably and without fuss.

If Mesa would stop making new amps I wouldn’t have to worry about GAS at all.

I’m only annoyed by it due to the financial aspect of it. Outside of that, I love gear and I don’t see it changing any time soon. I learned long ago not to think of gear as the thing that’ll unlock some skill or mentality as a player, I just really love gear.

I constantly want new stuff. But i also know I don’t need it. So i just keep what I have and don’t buy anything new. With the modeler I don’t see myself buying a new amp soon. Guitar I need to practice discipline. In 2025 I might buy a new Stratocaster and trade my old one.

Total gear:
- Yamaha Thr10
- HX stomp
- Fender telecaster and Stratocaster

If everything was free, we could try everything and have a set of amps/pedals/gear that worked for us and that would be it.

But its not free. The only reason GAS exists is because shit isn't free.

There are boomers who came from the middle class in the 50s and now are wealthy just riding the stock market. And the married couples inherited even more wealth when their parents passed. (And because they had high paying jobs, they are getting large free money social security disbursements even though they don't need it.) And their kids who didn't have to pay for their college and hit the ground running with a 150K salary at age 21.

There is lots of wealth out there. And these people like to stack it up behind them when they make YouTube videos. If we lived in a better world, stacking up gear in the background would be perceived as gauche, rotten, braggy, materialistic behaviour, and these people wouldn't get any views.

The internet has shown us wealth disparity, and it makes people feel worse about themselves. It feeds GAS.

But that doesn't mean we don't love gear.

For the most part, an FM9 takes care of my gas. It’s unusual that I hear a sound from a newly released pedal that I would use that I can’t coax out of it.

There are a few units that tempt me from time to time, but they be stayed happy enough with the FM9.

Part of this is because I already went through the process of adding outboard gear to a helix floor rig when the gas was too much. I found it’s too much trouble for me generally to bring all that for live work. I’ll hold onto a few pieces that are “special”, but then I will never find them interesting enough to pull them out of the drawer and use them. Going through that cycle a few times taught me I need to find what I want in the box and ideally work it into my main preset otherwise it will rarely get used and isn’t worth the trouble.

Exactly. And there were things in that catalog that everybody wanted yet few could afford to buy way back then too, and we were aware that there were people who actually could buy it. The internet didn’t change any of that.

Only that now we can see them with it. And every time we open our browser we are accosted by it.

This is like comparing Playboy magazing to tiktok/OnlyFans.

Well … modelers might become an issue on their own. Which one is reallly better? Sooo … the Fractal have better amps than the helix? For me… it’s all about the amps … and some overdrive pedals … and reverb … maybe….

So .. yeah. But I also only have the Stomp. Should I perhaps get myself an LT or Floor?

Or … should I get an amp and just be done with it?

I have an American telecaster, a Mexican Stratocaster … perhaps I should upgrade to a American Stratocaster

Etc etc etc

Accosted? Please…
