Why doesn’t a recording sound like an amp in the room? With a modeler, I’m not trying to replicate a stage sound but a studio sound.
Maybe that’s how I am different and might explain why I am so pleased. I dunno… seems simple to me.
The irony here is that people have been chasing certain sounds that they heard on records for decades, and modeling makes it possible because the entire signal chain comes into play.
Exactly. And when they get a modeler they want to be "purist" (DRV>AMP>CAB) ignoring that at the studio they use a lot of surgical EQ post-processing, and they complain that it sounds too harsh (or "digital", whatever that means)
If anything, using real mics on a real cab I usually find that to make it sound more like what I hear in the room, I add a bit of compression and EQ. And even those aren't neutral things as e.g different compressors and EQs can add some flavor. It gets into all those things that add something but you won't notice until you remove them.They use microphones, too. And compression or limiters. All available in a modeler, which is the missing piece of the puzzle if you want to nail a specific recorded tone.
Agreed completely. "Amp in the room" misses the point, IMO. Get an amp and put it in your room if that's what you want. Just the physical size and shape of the amp make an exact 1:1 equivalence impossible on that front. But getting the sound of an amp that's been tracked? Same. Don't care, never will care. I want to get sounds that work for my music, available in the ways that I use them.I don’t care about it sounding like an amp in the room. There. I said it. In public. I feel so free.
I don’t get why people have a hard time understanding why some people go for it.
It is a different sound…miced cabinet through fullrange speakers…versus the cabinet.
Anyone that thinks that’s the same…I don’t know what to say.
There’s plenty of other areas where w all make different choices…
That said….no recording can be “amp in the room”….obviously.
Why I “want it”…it simply blends better with a non silent stage sound. Drums are more midrangy on stage then at foh for example. Same for bass amps & acoustic instruments. It’s all about context…if I had to play against backing tracks….id forget about it…cause the backing track is all “miced” sounds also.
That said..tbh…in my mancave on my own..I also prefer it when I’m just fiddling. And genelecs 8040 ain’t shabby monitors imho
