All Things ENGL!

Actually, even the Artist Edition gives me pause. For me. I want that Engl
thing---and not an Engl version of someone else's thing. :idk

That track sounds great! There's one 200 miles from me for $600 bones.

From https://www.engl-amps.com/shop/heads/artist-edition-50-e653/:

"This amp has a very special history, it is our amp from the hidden, from the underground of the studios of Los Angeles. Based on the Ritchie Blackmore Amps E650, we designed an amp for Doug Aldrich in 2005. It should contain a few modifications, such as EL34 tubes in the poweramp stage; a lot of dynamics and sound was the mission."

What's giving you pause is giving me GAS!

This page is fast moving so Mayve I’m confused…

Under what conditions have you tested the e530? lol. Only through the built in 1.5 watt power amp?

I know your collection is immense, what’s next in the docket for experimentation?

I’ve always been interested in these. The only thing that’s held me back is I’m not into racks lol

The Thunder 50 head (with KT66s lol) served me very well, home/studio/stage from early 2021 up until a few months ago. Very neat amp. Not quite as “brutal” as most other Engl offerings, but still had no shortage of gain. Honestly slightly sad I sold it, especially because it has forum lore going back to the ol’ HCAF days that @Devin can attest to

I had the e530 preamp for years too; that was my main toane generator for my metal band back in the day up until I got my Deliverance.

Ran it through the fx return of my Carvin Legacy

Absolutely loved that thing

I kind of have that modded Marshall vibe in house already. That's the only reason
it is giving me pause. I want all the Engl-centric flavour up front. :chef

I wouldn't say, "No," to one, though. :beer

Hey guys. I've been playing a Fireball 60 for many years now and I'm really loving it. I've owned and tried a bunch of different amps, but I always came back to my Fireball 60.

Because new amps are cool though, I am looking at getting another ENGL (to replace the FB 60). I'm just not sure which direction to go. I'd describe my sound as somewhere between old school thrash and "modern" metalcore, usually tuned in Eb. No downtuned Djenty stuff. I've tried the Invader and didn't really like it. The Powerball sounds too compressed to me. I've tried the Fireball 100, but I do remember it sounding kind of dark (as I've later also heard other people say online).

Since I like the angry growl of the FB 60 (with enough mids dialed in) so much, which ENG amp would you suggest? The Savage sounds cool in Youtube videos, but I've read mixed experiences about using it live. The AE could be something, although from what I've heard it doesn't have as much gain as the FB and sounds quite old school (which is also cool I guess). Maybe I should give the FB 100 another try?

As mentioned, with my geographical circumstances being a small city in Australia with 2 stores and bad postal service, I won't order from Melbourne, let alone America or Europe - availability is really an issue in recent years. Even a decade ago the stores were full of Fender guitars, Marshall, Mesa, Friedman, Tone King, Bartel and Dr Z amps... I thought it would simply be that way forever. When I bought my Ultra Strat I had a choice of colours. Now there are less than half-a-dozen new Fender guitars (1 Ultra 2) available in my city. I'd buy an Ultra 2 HSS if I could.

I have a Marshall DSL5C and a 1x12 cab I picked up back then, thinking I'd upgrade when ready. Now I'm ready... nothing in-store.

I think I just convinced myself to get that Artist Edition 50. And maybe a vertical 2x12...

Gotta make the call to Sales, check delivery or pickup - and decide whether I want any pedals in the order.

Maybe a Vox Tone Sculptor (nu-tube eq) or Strymon Compadre...

EDIT: No Compadre available even to order online - but I can order a Tone Sculptor and wait a week or so...

Sounds like it is the kind of amp that really rewards as direct a connection as possible. :idk

Hope you land it. I am cheering you on from afar! :beer

Sorry to be "thinking out loud" on this thread... I might get a Soldano SLO pedal just because I can/availability.

I'm not sure about your budget, but I've been on the Engl page for a couple of days and spotted the rather expensive Founders Edition (way out of my budget).

I spoke to Sales about it.
Curtis: You want to trade in your Fireball 25?
Me: No, I just want the Artist Edition 50 head you have in-store.
Curtis: How much do you want to pay?
Me: I'll buy it outright.
Curtis: Ok, I'll Knock $100 off the list price and throw in some strings when you pick it up. It's got your name on it, no one will touch it.

Hopefully Saturday.

How is the 530’s little built in 2w power amp? Obviously not expecting a Triple Rectifier but it’s a neat idea having that tucked into the preamp if your power amp bails at a gig.

Sorry for the turd emoji, E! :hugitout

I think you know what it is in reference to. Also, the "Frequency Compensated Outputs"
are supposed to be tuned for use with running the Preamp direct to Mixer/DAW.

You'd have to be deaf to think it was even decent enough.

I kind of don't even know why they are there, to be honest. It has Line Level
Outputs and a Line Level Attenuator for up to a +15db of added Gain.

In some ways this Preamp feels very 1990s.... and not in a good way.

I have tried it with Headphones. Frequency Compensated Outputs to Mixer.
Line Level Outputs to Mixer.

Yet to power it with anything Tube based.

We'll see.... but no way close to leveling up to what I am getting out of the
Fractal Engl Models at the moment. :idk

And yes, the Manual says you can "Power Cabs" with that built-in power amp.

Sure you can.

:brick

I don’t care what their marketing BS says, I’ve never played a tube preamp that was worth a shit running direct.

I think you really need to send that preamp into the effects return of one of your tube amps, or put it through your 50/50 into a cab and see what it can do. If that sounds good, we can find a way to make it sound good direct later.

At the very least if you’re going direct it’s gonna need an IR with a tube power amp impedance curve baked in or that thing is gonna sound like a toy.
