All Things ENGL!

@la szum asks for recommendation of ENGL amp, is recommended Fireball, Powerball II, Artist Edition and Savage Mk II.

La Szum doesn’t like Fireball, ignores the other recommendations, buys Morse. Fail.

La Szum specifies his tonal preferences, asks again for recommendations of ENGL amps, is repeatedly recommended Artist Edition and Savage Mk II.

La Szum ignores recommendations again, buys E560 preamp, is surprised that it sounds like shit without a power amp section.

Conclusion: La Szum should have listened to good old TTZ!

:idk

No kidding! Are all Germans as blunt as a dull knife propelled by an hammer?

I get it. You prefer the minimalistic, direct, most efficient path for me to take,
and here I am enjoying the scenic route, taking my time, seeing a lot of new sites,
learning a few things, and taking notes as this merry Train rolls through the countryside. :beer

I didn't have access to a Savage, and a deal was made on the Morse, so having no experience
with either I figured at least hearing it in person would be better than YT clips. I wasn't impressed.

No biggie. Has happened thousands of times in my life. There is no failure. Just learning, adapting,
and moving on.

Tried to return the Morse and worked a deal for the E530 to check it out. Was told if neither
worked I could send both back (again, I do not have access to a store and in person shopping).

Assumed I could integrate the E530 into my Fractal setup and use the Fractal IRs and Power
Amp modeling. I got that part half right. :idk

Also, I have had a lot of great gear, and still have some great gear. If something doesn't blow
me away instantly I know it is not for me. Because what I own and have kept gives me a boner
over and over again. TMI? Sorry.

I have no problem trying on new pants, or shopping for shoes. Most of the time I have to
try on a few pair and actually walk around the store to see how they feel when I am doing the
activity that shoes were designed for. Really no different with amps/preamps/gear. Got log
some miles. Sometimes it is the first step and you know they are pinching your Bunion a little
too much.

I do appreciate all the input, and feedback. In an ideal world I loved the Savage Model in
the Fractal, and would have gone there first. Just wasn't an option at the time. :idk

Why? Did you expect a preamp to sound great in its own?

My first time ever hearing or using a dedicated Guitar Preamp was in 1989.
It was also the first time ever recording in a Studio. I was in a Trio with a
singing Bassist and Drummer. The 3 of us went into a Studio to record a 3 song
Original Demo. I had a Randall RG100 Half Stack which I loved, but the Studio
Owner had these new "Guitar Preamps," and he convinced me to use them
to record my guitars. So we all tracked together in the Big Room, got
the Drums down, and then laid our Guitars, Bass, and Vocals over it in
the Control Room. I had never done anything like that before. I struggled.
It was SO alien to me. I hated the sound.

It was a Rocktron Pro Gap, as I recall, that we ended up using. No power
amp modeling (what was that?), and no IRs or Cab Modeling (who knew back then?).

I knew it didn't sound as good to my ears as Mic'ing up my Rig, but I was young
and dumb and was convinced to use the Preamp direct into the board.

Yum. Transistors on Transistors. :facepalm

Anywho, last night reminded me of all of that. :idk

(Oh, and I plugged it in direct because the Manual said it had "Frequency Compensated Outputs"
for doing just that. Pro Gap didn't even have those back in the day. )

I get it completely. I get tired of these kinds of "experiments" pretty quickly. I've certainly had more than my share over the years  :bag :rofl If nothing else; it can give you a better idea of how it sounded if you used the "whole amp" vs. just the preamp section.

Yup. I know what sounds good to my ears.

Just need to travel down certain roads to realize I still fucking hate them.

I am not working this hard for sounds I can easily get elsewhere. The masochistic
nature of this Gear thing rears it's ugly and perverted head from time to time, anyways.

If the end result of this is me spending more $$$ to upgrade my Fireball 25 to an AE 50...

Well, I'm to blame. I'm a bit of a gear/tone chaser - but that AE 50 may scratch my Mesa Mark VII itch while they are unavailable...

All good! Enjoy the tinkering. I am.

Man, if there was an Artist Edition close to me in a Music Store I would
either be playing it there, or, preferably, playing it at home after playing
it there.

This page is fast moving so Mayve I’m confused…

Under what conditions have you tested the e530? lol. Only through the built in 1.5 watt power amp?

I know your collection is immense, what’s next in the docket for experimentation?

I’ve always been interested in these. The only thing that’s held me back is I’m not into racks lol

The Thunder 50 head (with KT66s lol) served me very well, home/studio/stage from early 2021 up until a few months ago. Very neat amp. Not quite as “brutal” as most other Engl offerings, but still had no shortage of gain. Honestly slightly sad I sold it, especially because it has forum lore going back to the ol’ HCAF days that @Devin can attest to

Not sure why I’m yapping about the thunder now, but why not :cop

Shameless band self promotion. Prolly sucks but this song is all Thunder, except for the solo which is a Diezel VH2

Thunders quite the bargain too, I both purchased and sold this guy for $400

I put my own ass in self-imposed timeout. :cop

:hmm

Back to enjoying the Savage model in the Fractal. Sorry, guys. My
shame knows no end.

Anywho, I tried some routing trying to use the E530 with the Fractal for
Cab Blocks. I also have a Load Box/IR Loader, a Mesa 50/50 and some
Real Cabs to try. But you know, that involves moving shit around and
I have a business to run and shit, too. Oh, and I loathe plugging stuff in
and out and moving stuff around. Bah! It blows! Most of my stuff is already
set up and dead simple to run. Instant gratification! :chef

Probably nothing from me on the E530 until next week at the earliest.
Son and his GF are coming up to stay for the weekend. We have the
big Sno-Drift Rally Race here this weekend---and lots of food, and
beverages because my dry out month has passed. Maybe. :columbo
