Adventures in pedalboard building

I definitely prefer the older Big Box EHX Analog lineup versus the new mostly digital/DSP
smaller enclosure lineup of the current EHX.

Warts an all. I mean... wall warts and all.

I prefer the old big box ones too, but I believe most of the small versions of the classics are still all analog. The small ones don’t sound quite the same though

Tried setting up two separate paths with an A/B. The box at the end gives me separate master volumes for each path.

Preliminary results are good. I think I’m going to keep moving forward with this approach.

Also, turns out the Micro Chorus does a decent Leslie impression, so I might keep it around for that!

Who makes this A/b switch?

The JHS Mini A/B is a good price, but I'm unsure if it has some features I like in my Radial Twin City, which has a buffer, phase switching etc.

JHS

My goal was finding the simplest, least feature packed, cheapest passive A/B available :grin

Got both the A/B and the 2 channel mixer for $35 each which seemed good to me

Friend's dad has a Deluxe Reverb and some Marshall tube amp. He was looking for a switcher like this but couldn't find anything simple.

Gonna recommend this to him. Thanks.

Or you can buy a TC clone of it, to test out the sounds first:

I’ve tried to kick this pedal off my board on numerous occasions and even considered an “upgrade” to the OG, but this is just a good sounding pedal and I now have a soft spot for it. $40 gem of a pedal. (If the Dimension style chorus is your thing)

This seems to be almost turning into an MXR board, haha. That wasn’t intentional.

I forgot how much I love the Carbon Copy! You almost forget it’s on it blends so well. I could leave it on for a whole show. It serves the same function as a reverb for me in a lot of ways, it just fills space nicely.

Also I’m liking the Micro Chorus a lot more after a break from it. It’s staying.

You know, when I first started this thread I thought I would be spitballing ideas and auditioning pedals on this little board and then building a nice big board once I figured out what I wanted…

But now I realize that’s not gonna happen, this is pretty much it, haha

I’ve still got plans to add a few more pedals… maybe I’ll go buy a wood shelf from Lowe’s to use as the board

I realize this is who I am when it comes to pedalboards - sparse, utilitarian, simple, analog, the fewer knobs and controls the better. I’m just not a big fancy pedalboard kind of person I guess.

And every time I’ve found myself looking for pedals to add I seem to gravitate towards the simple tried-and-true classics

Looking good @metropolis_4

The Carbon is really nice, and simple. That’s pretty much how i use the Digitech Obscura: murky dark lo-fi long repeats that sits behind everything, but I use it mostly for ambient. Together with a pristine clean digital delay, its post rock madness :knit

I think I’m going to need a couple more drives, but I can’t decide if I want to use the ODR-1 as a lower gain drive and get something a little more gainy to go with it, or if I want to use it as the more gainy option and get something lower gain.

It’s so good at so many things I can’t decide which spots to have it fill

I would consider it being an low gainer due to its neutral nature and something more gainy have more cut/bite, like a rat type or ocd type of thing.

Ooooooor, push the fuck out the odr with a TS type thing or boost thing before it.

I think I’m leaning in that direction. Both actually! The GE-7 is fantastic as a boost into it, but I’m finding sometimes I want to boost with something that adds its own gain, like a TS.

I’d like something with a little more Marshall flavor as a more gainy option.

The only problem is I like a low gain option that is thinner on the low end and chimy, like a Morning Glory. And the ODR-1 isn’t that sound. It’s more full and warm.

I love the Brown Amplification Protein. You can run an ODR-1 (green}, bluesbreaker (blue), and stacked (green into blue). :chef

If you have a bluesbreaker type pedal, try stacking them like the Protein. You may like it.

A bluesbreaker is definitely one of the “flavors” I want to add.

I think the problem I’m running into is the ODR-1 Anniversary is the best all-around overdrive pedal I’ve ever used, but it’s just not exactly what I want for each specific drive spot.

For lower gain I’d rather have a bluesbreaker, for gainier I’d rather have a MIAB.

On my main board I have the Protein into a Purple Plexi, and more often than not, I use the Protein "stack" instead of the PP for "Marshall-esque" tones. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ YMMV

Hmm, that’s something to think about. Maybe step #1 for me is getting a bluesbreaker style pedal and stacking it with the ODR-1 and see if that does what I’m looking for before jumping to a miab…

I could see that working for me. Thanks for the suggestion!
