I never "heard" EC in VH's playing before.. but I think Allen makes a good point.

It is true EVH was influenced by him, most rock guitarists from that era were I imagine. But whatever he took from Clapton he certainly made it his own enough that he sounds absolutely nothing like Clapton.

Yeah, I was a lot of annoying things as a college student, but pretentious was not one of them. Wildly insecure is more like it.
