What Do You Think About "Shredding"?

EVH revolutionized everything
He was also a riff master, something lots of folks overlook, tight and always in the pocket

:chef
There's a guy I used to talk guitar with from the old MetroAmp forum.. goes by "garbeaj".

His contention was that many VH licks were simply Clapton licks played at 2x speed.

hmmm doubt it I don't see any Claptpton in any EVH, although I do know he was influenced by him

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I’m glad they opened so you could leave before a Dave Matthews came on.

As much as I appreciate the musicality/musicianship, DMB was never my thing either.

Same here.

Sounded like a really hokey idea to me.. at first.

Then he proved it in a Youtube video he did a while back.

DMB is actually a band I’ve wanted to listen to more but never do. Carter Beauford is worth the listen alone, but Dave’s got some interesting guitar parts I certainly never would have came up with in a million years.
In a thread where we are arguing the merits of Ratt in the context of shred that serves the music…if you didn’t see those early small venue DMB shows in VA, you missed out on some great drum, sax, and fiddle shredding in the context of some pretty great songs with a whole bunch of college kids, equal parts men and women, havinga great time. Obnoxious entitled college kids maybe, but pretentious is the last word I would use to describe those shows.

Gotta say, even back in the day, never thought of George Lynch, Bill Leverty, Mark Kendall, Frank Hannon, Mick Mars, Warren DeMartini, Reb Beach, Steve Vai etc. as posers.........

I remember when DMB could barely get 50 people in the door at The Flood Zone in Shockoe Bottom.

Shredding is where it’s at.

Check out the Dave Matthews/Tim Reynolds Live at Luther College album.
I have that double cd album somewhere. There's some good music on there but I can only take so much of his singing after a while. I tried though.

I have no idea who this DMB mob are apart from online. Double Platinum albums weren't released or didn't chart in Australia and I don't think they ever toured. :idk

I never "heard" EC in VH's playing before.. but I think Allen makes a good point.
It is true EVH was influenced by him, most rock guitarists from that era were I imagine. But whatever he took from Clapton he certainly made it his own enough that he sounds absolutely nothing like Clapton. :rofl
