What Did You Do With Your Guitar(s) Today?

Changed strings on both of those.

I think I finally fixed this saddle burr on my Blue Honu Majesty.

I had the same problem on my Enchanted Forest when it was brand-new, but it was 6 years ago, so I probably forgot about the method that I think finally did the trick.

This damn thing broke 2 high e's in less than 24 hours, and it couldn't all be attributed to most of my practice riffs using a lot of that string.

I try to go real easy with the abrasive cord across the saddle, because it can wear a groove into it if you're too aggressive, and because it's where the Piezo tone comes from, I obviously didn't want that to happen.

But after I broke that 2nd string in such a short time period, I had the proverbial 'lightbulb above my head' moment': Instead of pulling the cord back-and-forth across the saddle (in the direction of the string), pull it across the saddle. Yeah, DUH!!

I did that while rolling the cord and moving it back and forth slightly, kind of how you would move to different areas of sandpaper, if you were sanding wood.

I think that did it, cuz I haven't broken the high e again yet, and it's been almost a week. And with just a little bit of string tension, I slid the string across the saddle, and it felt smooth.

Played my new Friedman BE50 Deluxe. Still dialing in the return level and master volume for the overdrive channels. Pretty cool amp.

Switched to 50s wiring. Replaced the 2 tone pots while I was at it. Broke one so had no choice lol. I had some RS Guitarworks CTS pots.

Original modern wiring:

Rewired to 50’s wiring:

Traded a bunch of pedals I'm not using for this:

I found it decent playing enough that I took a chance as the Tet'addario strings were so corroded the unwound strings were black and the wound strings were deader than Lincoln. Thankfully, new strings make it sound great and it sounds as expected. I'm probably going to replace the dummy toggle switch for a solderless 3 way from EMG, then have 2 vol, 2 tone controls. I think the only reason it has two toggle switches (one is a dummy switch that does nothing) is to avoid Gibson trying to prevent the guitar from being sold in America. Came with a case as well.

Also tried a couple Les Pauls in Guitar Center that I believe do not have the usual Slim Taper garbage profile (yuck!), so I may need to pick up a Standard (50s or 60s) or a Custom 70s.

I mentioned elsewhere that last year I went into a few guitar shops in Dublin looking for a Tele, believing I wanted one because Julian Lage has one. And that I came home empty handed after not really gelling with any of them.

The Reverend Charger is exactly what I wanted the Tele to be.

Been playing this 1970s Gibson Johnny Smith for the better part of 2025, and I’ve decided to give it a rest for a few months and try something else. So I cleaned it up, including using string wipes that took quite a bit of the accumulated grime off the roundwound 11 set with the plain G.

Then dusted it and polished it a bit with a microfiber cloth before hanging it up with a humidity pack before the winter sets in, when the heater tends to dry out the air.

Now pondering which guitar to use for this week’s jazz jam session. ES-125?

Been on a Strat kick since I got the newest one. I modded the wiring a bit on blue MIM. I had put it back to SSS with all Texas Specials (my parents got me those pickups in high school for Christmas one year) and wired it up with a master tone and no load blender pot for 7 sound Strat goodness. It’s in E flat. Other 2 are in standard.

The last few days I’ve been using my Mortatone Coyote Fuzz - a germanium fuzz face clone built by a guy who used to build some kickass tweed style amps among other things - with these and have really come to love this pedal. Using it into the Metro on 66 and 68 modes with just enough gain for some breakup. And yeah, I’ve been doing the pseudo Hendrix thing with the Strats, fuzz face and Metro and it’s been fucking awesome. Gonna have to get a new Univibe for this setup eventually as I sold my last one a while ago. Also looking into a silicon fuzz face. I’ve got some GC rewards coming soon so I’ve been eyeing up a few on their site.

I put a Lace Sensor Triple Rainbow set (Purple/Silver/Emerald) with a Mojotone Strat Deluxe solderless harness in one of my Stratocasters. I have it set up for a master volume/master tone/blender and the volume pot has a treble bleed on it.

I may take the pickguard off to try setting some or all of the pickups to use a different potentiometer value (you can set it to 250k or 500k, but the literature doesn't tell you if off is 250k and on is 500k, or what).

The only thing is I am not sure if I hooked up the white/green wires correctly to the ground terminal, as I get more noise than the bridge and neck, so I may need to remove the pickguard to correct that at some point.

I have a second set of Lace Sensors (Ultimate Triple set, which is Red/Silver/Blue) which I plan to put in another Stratocaster of mine. The Mojotone harness will have the same settings (blender pot, volume pot treble bleed).

Dropped from 10's down to 9.5's on my Ibanez AZ HSS. I think I realized I like a little higher action but with that a little lighter gauge string. Now it feels super easy to play. Also tweaked the truss rod a bit because there was too much bow so notes were a bit sharp around the 5th fret. With that and adjusting the intonation, chords are sounding SO much better on this guitar. Truly my #1.

Up next, I'll probably swap my Strat guard out to put the Suhr V60LP back in, probably with the mint green / aged white look, and then set up the tremolo for floating again. And likely go 9.5's on that as well.

Oh yeah, one more annoying thing, the output jack on my Ibanez AZ is a long barrel jack...it keeps cutting in and out with my wireless. Going to order a Switchcraft replacement as I've heard those are much better quality. I will say I love this guitar but both pots and now the output jack have failed. Bummer.
