What Did You Do With Your Guitar(s) Today?

I also started a complete pickup swap on my HSH Suhr Modern.

Getting everything out wasn't too bad... But I needed to drill out the pickup tabs for the Tom Anderson HC-3 bridge and HC-1 neck pickups... Only for them to not fit because the tabs are square but the body is routed for angled tabs :(

I used the Dremel to cut them - they look like a caveman did it but you can't see them once they are installed unless you're doing a detailed inspection.

I ran out of energy after a lunch break - I'll probably resume tomorrow.

All done, and correctly on the first go around which is amazing for me considering it's got push-push pots to switch each humbucker between series and parallel, taps them and adds middle SSL-6 in positions 2 and 4, and combines them in position 3.

I like the sounds so much better than the Thornbucker / TB+ / V63 that were in there before.

All the combinations are much more useable, too. I didn't like the TBs split or parallel at all. I didn't like the V63 when used in 2/4 and really didn't care for the top end response of the TBs in full humbucker mode.

I thought about this for a long time. I should have done it sooner!

Enjoy
Damn that’s one long whammy bar you’ve got there 😂

I’m working up a 15-20mn “Beatles Suite” for a live set in mid-March, so today I did some of the preliminaries, experimenting with ways to mix and match a few similar songs into a cohesive piece. I don’t sing, so I approach the songs as instrumentals, with some inspiration from Bill Frisell. Songs for now are Blackbird, Free as a Bird, Lucy in the Sky and In My Life, in no set order yet.

How about I'm Down?

I'm kind of back in a real single coil mood and have been swapping the noiseless pickups out of my guitars. Lately they have felt kind of dead sounding and uninspiring.

Rewired the original pickguard from my Ibanez AZ with a Suhr Thornbucker Plus in the bridge and ML's (V63+) in the neck and middle. Fresh switch and pots too as the noiseless set had 500k and I needed 250k with the real single coils.

Sounds and feels great, maybe need to tweak the single coil heights as they are sounding a bit warm but should be fun.

Other project of the weekend was to rewire my PRS S2 Standard 24. The volume has been shorting out at 10 which obviously isn't fun. Pulled it apart and sure enough it's a bad pot.

While measuring the pots, I found they were both under spec, around 450k. Maybe that's why this guitar sounds so dark and dull? I went to my stash and all four of the 500k pots I measured were below spec at 450-475k as well. Everything else I tested measured fine.

So I ordered a new set of 525k pots because I want max brightness in this all mahogany guitar. Not sure if I'll keep the current pickups in there (Suhr SSV's) or swap those out for a pair of Duncans (59/Custom Hybrid bridge and Jazz neck). Maybe keep it as is and see how the higher value pots sound.
How are you liking the Thornbucker Plus & ML's? Trying out an Ibanez AZ and wasn’t a big fan of the Hyperion pickups (too modern for me, looking for a more classic strat sound).

As for what I did today: confirmed (AGAIN) that I prefer pedals and amps (heck even pedals in front of modeler) over plugins or modelers at home.

They sound good to me! Thornbucker can be a bit mid heavy but all humbuckers are.

Picked up a couple fun things yesterday...

D'Addario leather auto-locking strap - I've found when sitting down I hunch over while playing and that's causing some back/neck pain. Having a strap helps quite a bit and lets me get up and move too. This strap seems pretty solid, really wide chunk of leather which feels decent and the auto lock works pretty nicely so long as the strap buttons aren't massive.

Dunlop Tortex purple picks (1.14mm?) - been down the pick rabbit hole lately and flipped back over to "just use something normal", except I wanted to try what a really thick Tortex would be like.

D'Addario NYXL 9-42 - think I'll put these on my Ibanez and see how long they last compared to my CE-24 with XL's. Trying to figure out if expensive strings are worth the hype.

Only bummer is I missed out on snagging a clean Boss OD-3 for $50, which was on their site but sold before I got there.

Interesting, I have felt the same as I hunch over and it causes neck pain for me. What I realized is that I hunch over more when I am sitting on a chair with my feet touching the ground but if I raise the chair and let my feet hang, I hunch less (I guess is sit more straight in this position) and it helps with the neck issues. So I am now looking into chairs with footrests but I may try the strap as well.

I got a footrest a couple months ago but I much prefer just using a strap. Both are pretty cheap though.

Changed strings on 3 guitars this weekend, only 2 more to go before my regulars are good to go again!

Starting taking a crack at a Dream Theater song today, had the first hang-up at this section-

Making it through that part gave me enough gusto to keep going. Going to take Bud Bud With The Face to the dog park for a bit then get back to it!

Thankfully I have off today!
I have (had) 2 candy apple red strats so decided to paint one yellow. I've never had a yellow guitar, but I really like the color after applying.
Hard to tell exactly in the photo but the color is like a typical summer squash yellow in person, which is relatively neutral imo.
The neck is 1 pc maple, I'll probably do a white or parchment pickguard with HSS config in black. Black bridge with raw brass saddles, black tuning keys and black jack cover. I have everything but the tuning keys. I could also go for a straight up vintage look too but we'll see.

Pickups will probably be Dimarzio Virtual '54 in neck, Heavy Blues 2 or Injector in middle, and either a Steve's Special or AT-1 in the bridge.

The cool thing about the yellow is I can mix and match a variety of pickguard colors all day long.
