What Did You Do With Your Guitar(s) Today?

FINALLY bit the bullet and ordered some nut files to fix a couple guitars. My PRS CE-24 has a dead string at the nut and my Epiphone 335 has tuning issues with the Vibrola.
Nut files are one of the most important guitar tools I have, made huge difference in playability in every guitar I filed.

If you file a nut, should the slots be filed for the gauge of string you are using, or the next gauge up? IE, if I am using 9-12-15-24-32-42 strings, should I file the 42 (for instance) with a 42 gauge file, or a 46 gauge file? You obviously wouldn't want the nut filed for 42 when you are using a 46 gauge string, but I'm unsure if you should file at the gauge you are using, or the next gauge up.

It depends how good your files are . No movement in the bottom of the slot and no pinching is what you are aiming for. Many files are just not that accurate. It’s not unusual to need to run a 10 file for a 9 string. A lot of the double sided files are oversized too so you need to get to know how your set measure up.

I've kind of half assed addressed some fretboard shrinking by using a 6" fret file from StewMac and micro mesh pads. I need to get it 100%, but I'd need to remove the neck. I have a few other guitars (maybe 3-4) that I need to address as well. The sound is fucking hideous, but it seems to address the issue quite efficiently.

Got home from work and decided to finally get around to refretting my old tele. It's been in desperate need of one for a while but I've been neglecting it for other guitars. So just tonight I removed the old frets and hardware. Frets came out clean with no chipping. Literally only took 5 minutes! As the week goes on I'll refret and do all that biz. Jescar gold 58118 frets. Probably going to reinstall my older Fralin single coils back into it with a white pickguard. It'll be nice to get this one in optimal shape as it really is a special one to me.

I never realized how crazy the rosewood grain is til the light hits it just right? It's darker in person.

It’s raining out so I’ll have an unhappy husky saying “OOoooooooooohhh” to me all night, but no doggie park today and it’s been a slow day at work so I’ll actually have some energy to pick up a guitar!

Restring with NYXL + clean. G string kept popping out from the slot….. I had to tighten that damn thing like mad…. Now im worried its gonna do same thing on my next gig.

I’ve tested it at home and will test it again at rehearsal but still have that worry back of my head.

Im gonna take a back up guitar just in case. I usually dont thats how much faith i have im NYXL s ….

But after set up my tech had to cut one of the bolts shorter after intonation it was blocking term… I could go down but not up…. Because slot went so far back.

Grabbed my cheapo Kramer Baretta Special today and noticed a lot of open string buzz on the low E although the action is medium at the 12th fret. A little Googling told me to check the nut height by putting a piece of paper under the string to see if that fixed it. Sure enough, I add a tiny piece of paper folded in half and the buzzing went away. It sounds really good now lol.

Got a new Tusq nut on the way to see if that's better. $200 guitar so just a regular cheapo plastic nut that was pretty low and poorly cut to begin with.

Well, I've been like a squirrel these past few weeks. Still haven't gotten around to putting in frets for this one. :facepalm

But of course I had the urge to start another, new project. :roflIt's my own body shape and design made from Spanish cedar, going with black painted body and white pickguard, loosely inspired by a tele. Ordered a one-piece maple boatneck w/ 6100 ss frets. Pickups are tbd --but more than likely something I already have.

Alright, this was a pain.

I swapped out the Suhr Woodbucker that I had installed for a Suhr SSH (not plus) that I had sitting around. This one was drilled out for direct mount in my old Charvel, so I had to solder new brass nuts on it to be able to use the pickup ring. Now it works great!

The new nut was a PERFECT drop in fit, except the low E was even lower than before. So thinking I have have to shim the neck, I look at the neck joint and not only had I already attempted to shim it, the shim split and the spacing was weird. The neck pocket is not standard Strat so the shim wasn't a clean drop in as hoped.

So I pull that out and try a small shim at the heel of the neck and raise the saddles, that's not working either. There's just no play in the neck. Check to make sure the neck is straight, the truss rod literally doesn't do anything lol. That's a $200 guitar for you. At least the neck was straight, so I left it.

Ended up taking the shim material and cutting out a nut shim instead. This worked much better! Now the low E had enough clearance. I cleaned out the nut slot and glued the shim in place, then glued down the nut. Because of the weird/stupid string angles there's a lot of lateral tension on the nut, so I had to use more glue than in a normal guitar.

With new strings, the slots are just a bit high on the low strings and way too high on the top strings. I guess the nut slot was cut uneven. $200 guitar. I should have probably sanded it down on the base of the nut first, but at this point it's glued in and I have nut slot files. I filed all the strings down and left them just a bit high, then adjusted the string height at the bridge.

It plays pretty well now! With the flat board and height set properly at the nut and bridge, I can get really low action. The frets are still too small and probably a bit uneven, but it's playable.

Honestly I probably won't keep the guitar too long as I have other better guitars, and will likely swap the original pickup and tuners back in, but it's been a neat project.

I finally tried to adjust the Floyd on my Dean MD24 last night. The guitar was unplayable by the end of this winter. I followed some tips from the Floyd Gear Rant thread that finally made sense to me. I changed the strings to 10-52 for Drop C# while I was at it.

The Floyd is still not perfectly level (slight forward tilt), but much better than before. It was originally tilting back too much and bringing the strings way too close to the bridge PU for my liking. I think I was finally getting the hang of it at the end, but the first half of the adjustment wasn’t too fun.
