Update: he's going to build a "Strat O Caster" and apparently spent some time looking at mine when I wasn't around one day lol.
School has a pretty sophisticated CNC machine that he's been using for robotics club (he's one of the mechanical engineers) so he could dig around and find some open source files. That actually sounds like a lot of fun!
A little skeptical if he can build a neck from scratch but hey worst case scenario you can get a cheap one off a used Squier. And I've got boxes full of parts I can donate to the cause which could help!
That’s a good idea. Just remember that if you’re using Fender templates or measurements, they are not always 100% interchangeable with Squier parts or hardware. @Eagle would probably have more insight into this.We got a good chunk of maple last night for the guitar body. They didn't have any other woods that would make sense and were big enough. We got a board that was about 1.75" deep, 7.5" across, and 42" long. So he'll have to cut in half and join to make it work.
Thinking it may not be a bad idea to pick up a cheap used Fender or Squier for him to disassemble and see how all of it works, maybe be able to reuse some of the parts too.

That’s awesome! We had a wood shop when I was in high school, but I can’t even imagine if we’d had a CNC back then.
Most Squire parts don’t fit . Even made in Japan parts have issues between metric and imperial. You can use Mexican parts because they do fit. That’s a good idea. A USA scratch plate will actually give you reference points for most things. You can also get fender USA neck pocket dimensions on line . You can also buy sets of templates for neck pocket and all the routing.Yeah that's where I'm a bit torn, the newer Player models have USA compatible parts but not sure it's worth it for him to reference as a school woodworking project. I'm not expecting him to build a custom shop or anything. But if he did for some reason make a really nice body it would be better to have some half decent parts for it.

Templates only work with a pin router or hand held with a ball baring bit. For a one off this is the way to go because making a 3D model is going to require a lot of input and detailed information. The template method just requires some practice with the router.I don't know the details but he's planning to use CNC so was going to look online for some templates. I'm curious how far he gets there. Hopefully he's smart enough to practice on a throwaway piece of wood or styrofoam or something. All of that is way outside my wheelhouse!
Im giving stuff away.I gave some more today. I cant really use this stuff anymore. There's stuff i want to keep. What's the point in having stuff you don't use, right? Due to health problems i can't play much. I don't have a lot left. Im just hoping my instruments will get played.I gave a bunch of stuff away

Doing a solid for a friend and made him a cover of Addicted To Love![]()
I bought a vst plugin to throw crazy fx into my guitar signal via clever routing with the Quad Cortex.
I think I want an Empress Zoia now.![]()
