What Did You Do With Your Guitar(s) Today?

Update: he's going to build a "Strat O Caster" and apparently spent some time looking at mine when I wasn't around one day lol.

School has a pretty sophisticated CNC machine that he's been using for robotics club (he's one of the mechanical engineers) so he could dig around and find some open source files. That actually sounds like a lot of fun!

A little skeptical if he can build a neck from scratch but hey worst case scenario you can get a cheap one off a used Squier. And I've got boxes full of parts I can donate to the cause which could help!

We got a good chunk of maple last night for the guitar body. They didn't have any other woods that would make sense and were big enough. We got a board that was about 1.75" deep, 7.5" across, and 42" long. So he'll have to cut in half and join to make it work.

Thinking it may not be a bad idea to pick up a cheap used Fender or Squier for him to disassemble and see how all of it works, maybe be able to reuse some of the parts too.

That’s a good idea. Just remember that if you’re using Fender templates or measurements, they are not always 100% interchangeable with Squier parts or hardware. @Eagle would probably have more insight into this.

That's super cool! I bet he is stoked. :beer

My best bud locally, who I play in a band with, bought 2 different CNC Machines this Winter
for building guitars. He assumed it would be easy. Just use the right template, load your blank,
and go to town.

Hasn't worked out that way. Always a learning curve in Life---with some being steeper and
more arduous to climb than others. I bet he has more help and access to experts than my buddy
does. That's huge!

That’s awesome! We had a wood shop when I was in high school, but I can’t even imagine if we’d had a CNC back then.

Same. We had mechanical planers and lathes, and all your tools for turning were handheld.

I made some speaker boxes for my car and slapped some Jensen 6 x 9s in those suckers. :headbang

Most Squire parts don’t fit . Even made in Japan parts have issues between metric and imperial. You can use Mexican parts because they do fit.

Yeah that's where I'm a bit torn, the newer Player models have USA compatible parts but not sure it's worth it for him to reference as a school woodworking project. I'm not expecting him to build a custom shop or anything. But if he did for some reason make a really nice body it would be better to have some half decent parts for it.

A USA scratch plate will actually give you reference points for most things. You can also get fender USA neck pocket dimensions on line . You can also buy sets of templates for neck pocket and all the routing.

I don't know the details but he's planning to use CNC so was going to look online for some templates. I'm curious how far he gets there. Hopefully he's smart enough to practice on a throwaway piece of wood or styrofoam or something. All of that is way outside my wheelhouse!

Templates only work with a pin router or hand held with a ball baring bit. For a one off this is the way to go because making a 3D model is going to require a lot of input and detailed information. The template method just requires some practice with the router.

Im giving stuff away.I gave some more today. I cant really use this stuff anymore. There's stuff i want to keep. What's the point in having stuff you don't use, right? Due to health problems i can't play much. I don't have a lot left. Im just hoping my instruments will get played.
Sorry to hear that.

Said yes to a fill in gig with some homies I periodically do such for a while back…. Kind of assumed maybe it wasn’t happening because I hadn’t heard about rehearsals or anything. Guess it’s still on lol. Sounds like it’s a private party type deal, mostly covers and a few of their originals and very jammy so brushing up today. Have several shows with my original band up and down the front range coming up as well that’s constant changing setlists. Also going to be in OK for work the week leading up to two of these shows so over here like

THIS IS WHAT YOU WANTED

Really sorry to hear that. Good on you for passing along some joy and inspiration to others!

After working on a solo guitar performance (“Beatles Suite”), I’m really looking forward to getting back into the jazz jam session circuit. There are several venues nearby that hold regular open jams, mostly playing standards. Today I picked up my archtop for the first time and went through two oft-called tunes, “Days of Wine and Roses” and “Out of Nowhere.” Haven’t played them in months, but they were both right there under my fingertips. Also worked on “Watermelon Man.” And can’t wait to play them with others at the next jam session!

I bought a vst plugin to throw crazy fx into my guitar signal via clever routing with the Quad Cortex.

I think I want an Empress Zoia now. :brick
