What are you listening to right now ?

That sounds tight! I didn't know what Miho was doing since she left Lovebites. Good to see her again. Also great to find Toki from Aldious. The Japanese Female Metal scene is amazing!

Let's celebrate with the veterans SHOW-Ya, rocking since 1981

I’m all in on the new The Sound of Animals Fighting album. This is kind of a superband with members of Rx Bandits, Circa Survive, and Minus the Bear.

I’m over the moon with it. This is the opening track. Even if you aren’t into the first half, hang in there for the second half. I promise epic riffage. These guys can play. Their recordings are usually full live takes of the band.

When me and the Mrs. play the board game Ticket to Ride: Rails and Sails, I pick a CD at random as background music. This one is part of a 6 CD set of solo tanbur, an Iranian lute. At one point, we were both transfixed on the music and forgot about the game. This type of playing is a sort of spiritual technology that mystics and Sufis use to get into a kind of a meditative state.

The volume above I couldn’t find on YT, but here’s a selection from another in the set:

Enjoy!

Got on a Rx Bandits kick again. The musicianship is off the charts with this band. Every single player is playing cool stuff, singing cool harmonies, modulations and changes all over the place…

If you were a band nerd in school, you’ll love this:

Heard new rendition of old song last night. Damn it hits hard, especially if you are drunk hahaha. I love thrash and all that guitar madness but when I hear my native music it hit different hahaha

2 takes on the classic jazz standard Take 5.

Original Dave Brubeck cut from the groundbreaking 1959 album, with Paul Desmond playing the theme on saxophone, in a quartet format with piano, bass drums.

And a 2011 live recording of the Shanghai based vocalist Jasmine Chen singing the theme in Chinese and doing some scatting, with a guitar comping with bass and drums.

Both versions feature a drum solo, which I always liked about this particular tune in 5/4. But with all due respect to the original, I prefer the Chen version, which really has its own character, with Chinese lyrics and guitar doing the comping while being true to the original version. That to me is the beauty of jazz, consistency with variation, in this case in a different cultural context.

At a regional music house tonight this 1986 audio only concert came on while having a cup of tea and waiting for tonight’s jazz jam session to begin. I had not heard it before, these three guitarists playing together. Beck and Santana each did a set, Lukather joining on a few tunes, followed by a set with all three on stage.
