2 takes on the classic jazz standard Take 5.
Original Dave Brubeck cut from the groundbreaking 1959 album, with Paul Desmond playing the theme on saxophone, in a quartet format with piano, bass drums.
And a 2011 live recording of the Shanghai based vocalist Jasmine Chen singing the theme in Chinese and doing some scatting, with a guitar comping with bass and drums.
Both versions feature a drum solo, which I always liked about this particular tune in 5/4. But with all due respect to the original, I prefer the Chen version, which really has its own character, with Chinese lyrics and guitar doing the comping while being true to the original version. That to me is the beauty of jazz, consistency with variation, in this case in a different cultural context.
