What are you listening to right now ?

This never actually leaves my DVD player.

And to anyone who has not heard this since the original release in the 90’s, the 5.1 mix on it is fucking fantastic. The first time I heard it on my system, despite watching this so many times I wore out 2 VHS’s, was the closest I’ve ever felt like I was back at the show. The low end is really something else and it wasn’t until I heard it in my living room that I even remembered how much low end/sub bass was going on at that show.

I'll see you a a Pulse and raise you a Pompeii!!

What a rich and spoiled time we live in, eh? We have instant and easy access to what I would
have given my left nut for 30 years ago!

It's amazing that you can pull this up at a snap of the fingers!

I'm going to date myself here but don't you mean he followed in Jeff's footsteps?

True he was not the first Instrumentalist but He put it on the map, Being my age I know beck very well and growing up my radio station never played any of his instrumentals on the air, it was for connoisseurs only

:headbang

Guitar instrumentals have a long history, don't they?

Pretty sure bands/musicians like The Ventures, Booker T and The MGs, Freddie King, Duane Eddy,
The Shadows, and Dick Dale all had Top 40 Pop Hits with instrumentals in the late 50's and early 60's. :idk

Pretty sure neither Joe nor Jeff could ever claim that level of widespread awareness in the public sphere.

Very true but when Joe came out instrumentals were somewhat a thing of the past especially guitar oriented instrumentals
But I have to say my Era it was a game changer for me
:idk

Same. I had always been into rock music when I first picked up the guitar. People like Joe just sealed the deal for me. It just blew my mind that someone could use the guitar in an instrumental context to tell a story or “sing” like a vocalist.

I go through phases where I can’t stand listening to any of it. But recent releases from Andy Timmons and Lari Basilo kind of rekindled my love for it.

You mean Singing like this

60's had The Ventures, 70s had Beck, and the 80s were Joe and Steve's - Flexible actually came out a year before Surfing.

Yup. And King Edward had multiple instrumentals. Nearly one on every VH Album. I think.

Hendrix had instrumentals, too. Who hasn't heard Little Wing? :idk

I do remember exactly where I was and what I was doing the first time I heard Satch Booogie on the
radio in 1987. I was like, "WTF is this!?!"

I-75 going over the Caloosahatchee River in a rented car. Came on the Radio. Had the swing and swagger
of Van Halen, but it wasn't Eddie. I didn't know who it was, but soon found out. :chef

I could only afford an OG RG550 in black gloss.

Nice! RG's with pickguards are more betterer. :chef

The RG was black with black guard. May have been a 750? The pickup was Hot Pink. 🍭

We used to have this cool locally owned Music Store back in the day that would allow
you 30 days same as cash. I think I gave $750 and change for the Ibanez. Then I worked
as much as I could for the next month to pay it off. Pretty sure I was making $5-$6/hr
back then.

Raise your hand if you bought a Chandler Tube Driver because of Joe. Also bought a Palmer rack unit because of him.
The only thing I bought because of Joe was a DiMarzio Fred for my Ibanez 540S.

But the dozen or so Ibanez guitars I bought when I was young were due to the endorsements of Joe, Steve Vai, Paul Gilbert, Andy Timmons, and Alex Skolnick, among others.
