Came across this short silent video on my laptop, various scenes of New York City from 1911. It was labelled Museum of Modern Art and perhaps it is available to watch online, but taking these random screen caps gave me some time to ponder the scene beyond the brief seconds of video.

Watched with the Mrs. while visiting her family abroad. She could recognize some places from our visits there over the years, iconic structures mostly. I noticed all the men are wearing hats, women decked out in Sunday best, place references to Africa, Britain, China, various modes of transport.

As a third generation New Yorker, it evoked unseen memories. My grandfathers were children at the time, recent emigres from Europe who went on to become a sanitation worker and a waiter, and my father became a firefighter. I lived, studied, worked variously in the Bronx, Brooklyn, and Manhattan.
