Came across this by accident browsing videos. It was part of a series of educational cartoons made by Walt Disney in the mid-to late 1950s. In addition to Mars and Beyond, there were other episodes on Man in Space, Man and the Moon, and Our Friend the Atom. All featured top notch animation for the day, along with some live action, stock footage, and commentary by several leading scientists.
What was remarkable about Mars and Beyond is its full blown plan, from nearly 70 years ago, that presages similar, and ongoing, interests in this day age with sending human beings to, and maybe even colonizing, Mars. It also has an interesting story surveying historical speculation about Mars.
Science of course has come much further than what was envisioned in the 1950s, but the dream about going to Mars seems to be very similar. Makes one wonder about a persistent fascination.
It also raised questions, optimistically, on the tremendous energy needed to realize this dream.
