What are we watching now?

A couple weeks ago the wife and I finished season one of Paradise, I believe a Hulu only show. Near future after an apocalypse, where there are 25K people living in an under mountain town.

Not perfect, but highly recommended.

Main character is "Mr. 110% Do Right", contrasting very very well with another character, that is "Ms. 111% Fukkin' Evil". Lots of other interesting characters and plenty of surprises that are really well setup.

Wow, that is impressive. I had the sense that the pacing was deliberately unusual, but I never would have guessed they filmed entire episodes in single takes. It might be worth going back to watch a second time, with this in mind.
I read that last night as well. Super cool.

I had to watch some dipshit throw up a nazi salute at our local county school board meeting, so that was both unexpected and unfortunate. I tried to flush my mind of that stupidity with the season finale of Severance - which I guess I didn’t find as remarkable as everyone else.

I didn't want to spoil it for you before, but I recommended you keep watching just for sensei Silver. He's such a great villain in this.

I kept thinking, "That is exactly what Danney Carey from Tool is going to look like in 15 years." :lol

Man, I'm sorry to read this. If you don't mind my asking, what region do you live in? The gates have flown wide open for that shit, and it just keeps getting worse.

Northern Virginia.

These things all tend to be cyclical, I don’t get too worked up over it.

In this case it was obviously someone trying to provoke a reaction from their perceived political rivals, and it didn’t work. The room shrugged it off, they left, and they will be back to do something equally stupid and offensive at next month’s meeting so they can post it on Twitter and get more fake Nazi bot points, just like they did last month.

This is our unfortunate reality for the foreseeable future. One of freedom’s great responsibilities is having to tolerate those that weaponize it against us.

Reductionist clickbait.

The usual anti-woke crowd wouldn’t have bothered with this film even if its climax was Jesus and Mel Gibson driving an armored cybertruck through crowds of college protesters.

Even the commercially successful Disney live action adaptations have been critical dumpster fires. Taking on a 90+ year old piece of IP as sentimental as Snow White is a no win and they should have known that.

EDIT: oh god the dwarves WHO THOUGHT THIS WAS A GOOD IDEA!?

We just watched Jason Bourne from 2016. I couldn't roll my eyes any fucking harder. It was shot like a self serious tv show, with the shaky cam throughout but with never ending bass heavy heart pounding music.

The acting was unbelievable. The direction was, whatever emotion you may have experienced in life, or whatever excitement drew you to theater or acting, I want you to forget about that. We're going to pretend people have no affect, no emotion, and we're going to Botox your entire face for this. Please deliver each line as if you're describing the logic of a spreadsheet.

So I was hanging out for the insane action, but almost every fight scene was so short and "efficient," it was completely anti climatic. For any fight that latest more than three punches, the shots were so chaotic you couldn't tell what was going on.

And the plot...they've driven this so far into the ground, there's just nothing left to care about.

This proves to me that Matt Damon, once a promising actor with a cool personality, intellect, and acting chops, now replaces all acting with time at the gym. His goal is to be Arnold Schwarzenegger without any personality.

Lastly, it's not fun when everything in a movie is "the most in the world," meaning, your main character is the most impervious killing machine in the world, the smartest and most omnipotent in the world, outsmarting every move if his opponents, so there are so stakes for anything. Just watch ripped jocks pull off impossible feats of physical prowess and intellect for two hours. Who gives a fuck? I kept watching thinking the final fight between Vincent Cassel and God Himself in Human Form would be insane and cool, but it was just a car chase that felt like a video game followed by any anticlimactic brawl in an underground tunnel that felt like a sewer, which is where this movie should be buried and forgotten.

It’s the hero porn people need. How else am I supposed to feel like a badass from my sofa?

Haven't seen this one but movies are an escape for most of us from our issues which have no solutions.

Real heroes or heroines are not winning a fight with a group of goons IMO. They are either hurt in some way, incarcerated for hurting an evil person or inside a mental healthcare facility.

Optimism is necessary but there should be some realism to what is shown sometimes. There are no consequences to the protagonist's actions or logic sometimes when an action movie is made.

I love The Bourne Identity; it's a completely different movie: the story matters because you care about the mystery and the impact on the characters. Matt Damon actually has some acting in that one. The directing actually tries to show the action rather than obscure it, and the other characters also have, well, character.

I liked the one where he finds a woman at an embassy and falls in love with her.

I also liked Julia Stiles' performance in another one, her eyes expressed her emotions. Don't remember the movie names.
