What’s the current cool wireless unit?

I need a wireless and have been out of the loop for over a decade. I’d prefer something I can stick on my pedalboard without taking up much space!

I think the last I remember the Line 6 Relay(?) was the new thing, but I also remember something about them catching on fire?

Uncle leon mentioned in a Q&A that he really liked it

Yes the shure glx was great. The line 6 relay stuff isn’t bad but I haven’t tried a lot of brands to know what’s best bang for the buck

Leon is about the only guy who can recommend a Nux to me and I’d take it seriously.
he mentioned it was really good and get a tuner to boot not sure if he commented on the boost but doubt it be something you'd use

NUX B-8 Professional 2.4gHz Guitar Wireless System Black

Don’t laugh, but I picked this up off of Amazon for $55CAD and it’s worked great for me so far. No noticeable tone suck and more importantly, it works with active pickups without a trs->ts converter. I really like the fact that both ends are more like a dongle plug, keeps my setup more streamline with the Helix. No worrying about extra cables/pedals/power sources.

Got latency? :knit

I get super leery of anything that adds to the inherent latency in a digital rig. People
can beat me up about how negligible it is. For me it is not. It is cumulative and the
sum of ALL the A/D/A conversions going on in the entire chain. The last thing I want
to do is add to what is already there.

I know you want to jump around and do back flips and shit, so, likely not a concern.

The Shure GLX is about worst in class when it comes to latency, 5-8ms...

If maximizing tone and feel is the main priority, then they all suck to
some degree.

:sofa

If maximizing convenience and mobility is the main priority, then it is
a compromise some can live with. I am not one of them.

The guy I play with on the weekly uses one and I swear I can tell
a difference. Funny thing is he is rock and never moves and I am
a bouncer who HAS to move when I play. I know. Double-blind my ass.

Anywho, when combining things like drop tuning, tight chugs,
virtual capos, and palm mutes I have found wireless units to
kind of mush out that immediacy and definition you need. :idk

Now if you are playing down-tempo smooth R & B or Blues
you may be fine with a little more laid-back feel and vibe of
increased latency.

I AM curious about how much latency will stack up with a wireless when using the Virtual Capo, the whole “it’s a blast playing in front of a tube amp” starts to dwindle by impeding that sensation.

Think of it more in terms of what you get in return.

If you add say a Helix as your fx box in 4CM, you are adding some latency. You can feel that vs plugging in direct, but you got hundreds of fx in the tradeoff so that's fine, right?

Adding a wireless lets you run around freely. I find that the latency is not an issue unless you are playing Steve Vai stuff. I found that if I play really fast with enough latency (which required a Boss wireless + audio interface level latency) I started missing some notes. Otherwise, totally fine.

I've been happy with the little Boss WL-20L. I wish they didn't make two different models with and without cable emulation though, it needed to be just a switch. The WL-20L without cable emulation works fine by just rolling off your guitar tone knob more. As a hardware design otherwise it's just clever with the way you can plug in the transmitter to the receiver to charge the transmitter, then plug that in via USB to charge the receiver itself.

I’ve never used mine with the poly capo in the Helix but I do use it a lot with my Variax and we cover a tuning range of E Standard down to Drop B. I haven’t perceived anything but it’s not like I’m blazing any Yngwie/Vai/EVH style leads either. Mileage varies, grain of salt, etc.

I hate to say this because Line 6 were cool enough to send me a free one, but I had bad experiences with the Relay. The power supply on the G10 is flaky, I eventually had to duct tape it to keep it working. And the only time I tried to use the G10SII live I had terrible problems with it cutting in and out.

Never tried the G30-90 though, maybe they’re better

Andertons blew out the Relay G75 for $300 some years back, kinda inpractial format but it is really good, and only 1,34ms latency.
Has been flawless the few times I've used it.

I only buy wireless units from two brands, Shure and Sennheiser. With as crowded as our airwaves are here, I am happy to spend more money to get a unit that will work here. I have been using the Shure digital unit here for years with no issues. I also use the Sennheiser EW series. I tend to buy both digital and analog units. I like having both. I have played a lot of gigs with a piezo equipped PRS. I run the digital wireless on the magnetic pickups and the analog wireless on the piezo pickup. This has worked great in every venue in my area. Any cheap units I have tried in the past just let me down. a guitar teacher that I had years ago was a guy that didn't have a lot of money. He is the one that convinced me that if you are going to use a wireless, it is worth the money to buy a good one. He was using Sennheiser units way back then. I figured if he was willing to spend a lot of money on one, I should give it a try.
