Wazzup?? I'll Open Up With Something Controversial: What Guitarist Don't You "Get"?

Here’s an unpopular opinion for ya. I think EJ is a great guitar player. I just don’t like hardly any of his songs. I’m also not that enamored with his tone.

Well, to be fair, half his music can be played in an elevator. :rofl

Hahahah one night I put on Venus Isle before going to sleep, my ex-wife and I used to read in bed before passing out, about two songs into it, ”Babe, what the f*ck are you listening to? It sounds like he’s scared to sing into the microphone. Are you on the rag?“ :ROFLMAO:

If I were introduced to EJ today, I most certainly wouldn’t have the same appreciation for him. The first 6 months I started playing my uncle handed me his Total Electric Guitar VHS and told me to learn everything I could, his tones these days aren’t the same as they were back then, but he still gets spoken of like they are. But back from ‘88-‘92 they were on a different planet. Tones, Ah Via Musicom and Venus Isle are the only albums I really dig, I haven’t even listened to his last several albums.

John Mayer is the Eric Clapton of Gen X/Millenial generation. The most overrated guitarist of our time.

If I hear one more person say “oh no, you’ve got to hear him live. He’s way better live than on albums” I will punch a kitten.

If I can’t stand the dude’s albums, why would I see him live?

I’ve left live shows having a different appreciation for a band, so I can get that. I didn’t fully ‘get’ Tool until I saw them live; as well produced as their albums are, the dynamics at a live show are what really make that band and then the whole visual aspect, it’s a trip.

I’d have to say the same thing for Vai; leading up to the first time I saw him I listened to Passion And Warfare a bunch, it was my first time experiencing his music. I wasn’t a fan at all, but a few weeks later when I saw him my jaw was on the floor.

Definitely not saying you’d have the same experience with Mayer, but I can see how the “Go see it live” aspect has some legitimacy to it. I’m sure I’d have a good time at one of his shows if I got really stoned.

I think he’s a damn good guitar player. Is he a mega guitar virtuoso? No. And he’s never pretended to be one. He’s had Isaiah Sharkey in his touring band for that. He would let rip a few times in a show.

I’ve seen John Mayer twice with Dead and Company and he was fantastic. He is a great improviser. Given that format he did a lot of extended solos. That’s really hard to do and keep it interesting and not repeat yourself over and over.

Here’s him doing a kick ass Hendrix cover. This is more than just competent playing to me.

yeah i find he is totally competent and hardly anything more. as a pure guitarist.

That's weird you say that (well, not weird for you; for me) because when I saw Dixie Dregs open for Dream Theater, I went right out and bought one of their CD's, and I hated it so much I literally threw it out the window driving down the highway. Nothing like they were live.

I felt the same way with Jake in Ozzy. He's something else live, that's just not captured on the record.

This statement is confusing to me. I know the production ain't brilliant on some of them, but...

It's just something about the way he played live. Have you even seen Jake with Ozzy? (Maybe it had something to do with me being in the 2nd row at the Capitol Centre on BATM.)

The SFAM tour? I saw them at the Roseland with DT. They’ve got a killer live album!

Full Circle was one I really loved.

I still play Goin To Town all the time when I sit down and noodle

Santana yes, but Nuno? Sorry man, but we can’t be friends. In fact, I fart in your general direction.

To be fair I didn’t give him much of a chance. I bought Pornograffitti and he totally lost me with the intro to He Man Woman Hater…

I still think it’s the most ridiculous, self serving, unnecessary thing I’ve ever heard in a song. It had nothing to do with the song. He just decided he wanted to find a place he could squeeze in a clip of himself practicing to a metronome so he could show how fast he could play straight 16th notes.

It sounds like he’s playing warmup exercises on their album.

Maybe that unfairly tainted my view of him, but ever since I heard that and the little solo at the end of More Than Words I’ve seen him as someone more interested in showing off than serving the song…

I’m also a complete hypocrite because I love Yngwie and he does the exact same thing :rofl
