I smoked pot since 1972, just quit last Christmas.

Problem was, when I first started, it was just bag weed. Then Columbian Gold, Panama Red and Jamaican Gold upped the ante. I could still hang with that, studio and gigs were doable on full tilt, and alcohol never ruined my life because I only smoked pot and hash.

And hash oil.

So, along comes sinsemilla from the 80's, another notch up the totem pole, still gigging and creating in the studio, no problem.

Fast forward to 2014, weed is a million times stronger, another 3 years before Illinois goes full legal, and BOOM.

That shit was laced, for sure. You don't consume cannabis like I did and not know what's up. Potency goes up, price goes up, brain cells go dead, rent's due, power's shut off. Checks I write bounce. I sell gear. STUPID.

Now I pay rent, power's always on, I'm still creative, I have gear, I have peace of mind, and I remember what it was like to live high on weed. I have the advantages, just not the bills.

So, the moral of the story is, grow. Buy from the pot store if you're a trust fund baby, or friend up a chronic and drive him around for a buzz.

I used to buy 1/8's for $60 in Nor Cal in the 90's.

I just picked up a 1/4 Oz for $40 at the dispensery around the corner.

It's cheaper than beer.

The stores are always having some kind of sale down here, I think I spent $90 a couple weeks ago and won't have to get anything else for another month at the earliest. I rarely sit down and just rip through a whole bowl, I haven't rolled a joint in over a decade and only smoke blunts in social settings. These days it's 1-3 hits a time, maybe 3-4x a day depending on what's going on.

I never thought I'd hit a part of life where I didn't want to be baked, I spent ages 15-35 ensuring I was high all day but if I did that now I'd just fall back to sleep immediately after smoking in the morning. I won't even smoke on the weekends until the afternoon just because I don't want to risk gettin' sleepy or losing what little energy I have to begin with.
 
Colorado has had pretty lax laws most of my life. Was decriminalized during my HS era and was just a $90 ticket if busted (ironically, now that it’s legal I’m pretty sure penalties are way worse for kids in 2025 vs when I was a teen)

Most I ever paid for an eight black market was 35 regardless of quality. Many dispensaries still charge that or more as it’s a huge tourist trap industry here

Had a med card last year but it’s so late on the game it’s really not that benfitial anymore unless you are trying to buy more weight or want higher potency edibles

I’m not the stoner I was 10 years ago that’s for sure. Younger me would laugh me off the street with how low my tolerance is these days lol

Sweet spot for me is the outdoor grow $60 ounces my local dispo sells. Not quite as intense as the goofy indoor hydro Chem blow your brains out shit. But still plenty strong and lasts me ages

In college I would clear an ounce a week easy

I went through a dry spell in my 20's because I had just moved to Az and all the friends/band mates I had met just drank for the most part. Mexi shit weed still rolled around here back then too, gross.

Now that it's legal I'm definitely having a renaissance. It's also my first time living alone in 17 years so... yeah.. bong rips indeed.

Try living in Illinois. Prickster runs the show, and he sucks. I always bought the fortified weed, not the on-sale weed. That's what happens when you've been smoking over 50 years. I useta buy ounces for $15. Pot ain't cheap nowadays.

I’m consistently paying under $3 a gram now, from the dispensary, and it’s always 28-33% thc. It’s like 70 bucks an ounce now. Yeah a lot of dispensaries still sell $50-60 eighths, but I found a dispensary and brand I like that’s affordable. And it’s higher quality than a lot of the stuff I used to pay $50 an eighth for. I remember when I thought $10 a gram was a great deal. It’s a great time to be a pothead.
