The Official TGF Mesa Rectifier Appreciation Thread.

I have a Dual MW, and I've never felt the need to boost it. And like others have said, it's quite a versatile amp, with great tones in many flavors.

Whenever someone claims an amp doesn't sound good, my first thought is- If it's used, how old are the tubes? And of course, did you get it cooking? Mine sounds utterly amazing once I get it anywhere past bedroom volume.

Any amp that I can get lost for hours on, just noodling around w/o any effects whatsoever, is a great amp. The DRMW definitely passes that test!
Just different tastes, I’m addicted to a boost in the first place and that recto flub isn’t my ideal tone. Boosted though - both in modelers and with my amp it tightens up that gain to where it fits my taste. Offensive/aggressive tone is where I like to be a lot - even if it’s a clean tone I like it to cut

I have to wonder how many people are in the market for a new $3700 150watt tube head? Especially since the originals are pretty available used for a good bit less!
The economics of the whole rectifier reissue line has been questionable from the start. You can buy a revision G for half that and get original transformers, parts, etc. I get the 2C+ reissue because there are so few originals but there are a billion rectifier amps out there. Scarcity isn’t an issue for those amps.

yup yup. I use boosts on rectos all the time, but not because they 'need' it, it's because the are so sensitive to the input EQ and level. if you think the recto needs a boost because it's "not tight" you're not playing loud enough through a good cab.

yeah this is insane. it's a worse amp in pretty much every way than a MW and literally the only advantage over a rev g is that you know no one's been dicking around inside it. the guy who worked on my tube amps would also say that mesa's build quality is better now than in the 90s because the boards are better designed and laid out, but I personally have no idea.

but mesa is a lifestyle brand now, these are man cave accessories, they dgaf if you actually play them

Better boards would surprise me with manufacturing’s general trend towards enshitification, but I have t looked at the new stuff. It doesn’t come up much since you rarely see a broken down 90s recto. Some of them look like hell by now though.

I agree, I buy used to save a buck but I have a few friends that only want new stuff. Open box is even an issue for one of my friends.

I try to explain to him that the guy at the factory uses his penis to "pack" the gear into boxes but I guess he is ok with that.

This is pretty much the only reason I can come up with. It’s obviously not the decision I would make, but I get it. Not everyone has access to service, etc.

Wait, how have you guys been packing boxes?

past seven? eight? years I had a rev F and rev G dual and a tremoverb and they all needed components replaced or traces redone. I was playing those amps a LOT, though, probably waaaaay more than the POs. I had a couple Singles in that time and no issues with them at all. My guy told me that it's a few things, one is just that any amp that age has caps and resistors going, the second is a specific thing in rev G power sections with these two big resistors near the PI that start overheating as they age and cause the traces to lift, and the third is the plastic standoffs for the earlier 90s boards that lead to flex when you dick around with the preamp tubes a lot. I definitely recall him saying that it's the circuit layouts that are better just because of stuff they learned, not components.

I wonder if these revisions also bring back the dogshit cleans. The MW was truly the best mainline Recto version and I'll fight anyone who says otherwise 😆

I get the lifestyle brand thing. I'm 100% Fractal at the moment but I'd still like to have a Recto head around the house just to look at. Hoping to eventually find a broken one or a dummy head for this purpose. Or I could just buy the real thing again and not play it like I did last time.

wouldn't fight you. I feel like the ToV has a strong claim in that it's got four modes that would each be worth buying an amp for, but the MW has that and you can actually dial in their best game live.

Rev G cleans aren't dogshit though. it's just really hard to dial them in as well as a good high gain tone and then volume balance the two. try using red channel for cleans, start with the gain all the way down and dial up slow, and then orange vintage for high gain. channel clone red to vintage too. this is one of the best ways to rev G if you don't need the full djun djun of Modern. lots of non-intuitive things work on rectos.

I used to think the cleans were crap on my G but it has surprised me a couple times through smaller open back cabs where it came to life. I do think the MW clean is better and more flexible but the G clean is better than it gets credit for.

Huge agree on modern cloned to vintage. You can get HUGE non scooped tones there with the dual presence control action. One of my favorite tones in the amp and seemingly very few people bother trying it. It’s a little like merging modern and vintage. Amazing with EL34s too.
