New amp day!

Yaaaaaaas this thing slays. It needs a boost imo, otherwise I really wouldn't jive with it. The bottom end blows my Mark V 35 away, and the gain sounds pissed off, I love it. Cherry on top is the purple light.
Yep that’s rectos for you. Your choice of boost means you have the freedom to set the pre-filtering to your choice of sounds. It’s very freeing IMO.

Forgot to mention earlier this was how the power tubes were seated, likely from the Fed Ex dude dropping the box 😵‍💫

no that's what people like to say. people who never spent half a decade. a decade. a decade and a half voicing an amp. truth is they spent that long tweaking and playing to distill the recipe, but the only way to get the actual sound is with tubes within a certain spec, same as the design. the whole thing with mesa tubes is, yeah they're rebranded, but any tube with the mesa stamp has been tested and sorted to be exactly within spec of circuit design. so with mesa tubes you get, the sound. with JJs, you get, a sound. if you get off on boogie recipe you can tell right away if it's off spec, or there's groove tubes in the preamp of a dual rec. it sounds fucked up to me until I put all mesa tubes back in it, then bam. tone town.

100 per cent this. you can fuck around with the preamp tubes in rectos but honestly it's best to just put their tubes in and forget about it. there's so much variation to play with in the recto gain and tone stack that there's no reason to go down the tube rabbit hole.

@Dez if you *have* some mesa 6L6s around or the budget for them it's really worth it, I owned a couple of singles and while for other rectos el34 vs 6l6 was a matter of taste (even preferred EL34s in the roadster) I think the Single is objectively better with 6L6s. What's your cab situation?

I’ve got an Orange PPC212 open back that I’m gonna close up - I mostly run stuff through my Suhr RL though to keep my family sane lol

Huge congrats @Dez !!!

That's awesome, glad you dig it. I heard a band a while back with a single that just absolutely slayed it. Monster tone for days. Made me order one but it arrived broken or that's what I'd be rocking right now.

It’s such a fun amp to play with - also freeing from the Mark experience where it feels like a lot of settings work for me on the Rectifier.

Me playing my first chugs though:

One of the oddball transition revision G heads with the attached power cord but big logo popped up at GC last night for $1500…which ain’t bad. Someone snagged that one fast. They had listed it as the 90s reissue.

You possibly helped GC make a sale haha

turn it up, make your sons strong for the shield wall

yeah that's a decent cab for it. if you've got a buddy with a mesa 4x12 you've gotta try it, especially for the heavy shit. if you have any kind of band situation happening it's a great jamming amp, easy to balance channel volumes, cuts well and sits well with the bass.

I bet you'll find you don't want the boost as much in the room at a decent volume. That's true of all rectos though, the 'problems' people have with them (flubby! fizzy!) are 70 per cent 'not loud enough' and 30 per cent 'don't understand how a band mix works'

It's a moral imperative.

BTW I'll save you a few bucks and a lot of internet searches. You want the Penn Elcom M1320K Black Knurled knobs. They're the same ones that Mesa sources for rectos:

If you get them and you don't find them shiny enough, after you install them on the amp, rub some oil on a cloth and rub it lightly over the face of all the knobs. This will get them shiny and not mess with your fingers as you turn the sides of the knob. After a few hours they won't feel oily either on top and they will look awesome.
They’re out of stock of the black ones dammit. Waiting to see if they plan to restock and also reached out to Mesa lol
