The Coffee Thread

Okay, Moccamaster is received!

It's a lot lighter and smaller than I expected. I think it's mostly aluminum and plastic, although the plastic is supposed to be pretty high quality. It's a really simple machine with an on/off switch, heating tank, reservoir, and the shower arm just presses onto the top of the water chute. The filter and lids are a little finicky. Carafe is very sturdy, insulated stainless steel. The basket has a flow switch where you can have it fully open, fully closed, or halfway open to control the flow a bit.

Did a couple water flush brews and it works very fast and quiet. It does 4 cups (half a liter) in under 3 minutes and 8 cups in about 5 minutes. There's no gurgling noises either, it's almost silent. Heats up quickly too, probably starts brewing in under 30 seconds.

The shower head is a little odd, it doesn't fully extend over the basket. So early in the brew the bed doesn't get fully saturated. That seems to be the most common complain from coffee nerds. However you can just rotate the basket while brewing to even it out. Or most people don't touch it and don't care.

Test brew last night, I ground coarser than usual (7 on my Ode v2) and followed the recommended ratio (28g to 500ml which is a bit lower than my usual 30g). Coffee was clean but a bit weak and understated. Today I ground closer to normal (5.2 on the Ode v2) and it's better but still a bit weak. I think I'll try tomorrow upping the dose and staying with slightly coarser grind. Flip side, I could adjust to the weaker coffee a bit too. I've got a pretty solid caffeine buzz going on so a little weaker wouldn't be all that bad.

Carafe kept the coffee fairly hot after two hours, so I think it would be acceptable for three hours or so. That's a pleasant change to not have to constantly microwave it!

Cool. Hope you get it dialed in. :cheers

I like my brew strong(ish). I am in the 13:1 water to grinds ration. I don't weigh or measure,
though. Kinds of have it dialed and can eyeball it now using the same shoddy equipment
for so many years.

NCD. This shit is fire!

Good coffee today with the MM. 45g coffee to 750ml water, a touch coarser grind, and I didn’t touch anything. The bed was a bit dished but no channeling so the shower head does just fine.

man. anything with citrus and floral notes is a very hard pass for me. absolutely cannot take bright light roasts. i know its en vogue, but i err way towards the earthier flavors and the addition of roast. a full city yrgacheffe no prob... but the froot loopy, citrusy.. oof. i think my palate was shaped in second wave, and third is super super foreign and goes against the cultural meaning of coffee of my generation.

i admit to being old, man. but its always awesome to find what ya love- so glad you got a good bag! i so seldom find them myself!

Washed coffees are much more subtle than say, anaerobic fermented, but yeah, it’s an acquired taste. Tasting notes are there but often not as obvious as people think.

Agreed. I've been re-upping on Ghost Roaster's pink bourbon since September. Very excellent. I think they might finally be running out of it.
You ought to check out what Black & White currently offers. I’ve tried them all and they are fantastic.

gents i wish i had a good supplier for a well roasted and blended traditional italian espresso since filicori zecchini gave up on their delicato blend.

any inspiration?

Illy is always good in a pinch, imho.

last i tried it it was too acidic for me- either that or my buddy pulled a really rankly underectracted shot  possible- but i was thinking it was maybe just light roast. appreciate ya throwin it out there though! for whatever reason my local grocery store has kimbo whole bean, and its literally one of three whole bean coffees in the store. bloody miracle where i live.

i actually found a vendor of the filicori and ordered two kilos 😄 im alright drinking the mersh street vendor stuff like kimbo or lavazza for a bag or so, but it gets old fast!

I’m sitting in the garage drinking a cup from a Keurig machine I dug out of the closet. My wife is pregnant and can’t handle the smell so I have to stay out here :rofl

That being said, I thought I was luxurious because I usually drink french press. I gotta look into some of this stuff y’all use.

ALDI had a couple kinds of whole bean organic coffee from Honduras (currently going through that one) and some other Central or South American country (will look at the bag whenI get home if you want a name) that I really enjoy, abd it is very reasonably priced....

Which? Coffee

The tasters said

M&S came top overall in our taste test, with the 3 big brands – Douwe Egberts, Kenco and Nescafé – not far behind. Our coffee drinkers thought Aldi's gold roast coffee was a great compromise between quality and cost, so it's our Great Value recommendation. M&S coffee was the highest-scoring coffee among our tasters. It received good marks across the board for appearance, aroma, flavour and mouthfeel. Its strength of flavour and bitterness levels were deemed perfect by over half of our panel. While not as pricey as some of the brands, M&S coffee isn't cheap. However, it does well on ethical stakes as one of only two coffees on test to be Fair Trade.

The Mrs. and I were turned on to Sang Tao 8 Vietnamese coffee by friends and it’s now all we drink. Seems to be dark roasted with a blend of spices, possibly cinnamon and nutmeg, imparting a slightly sweet flavor. We drink 2 small slow drip brewed cups every morning with warmed Jersey milk, half coffee half milk, served with walnut stuffed Sukari dates.

I started making coffee from a French Press as a casual drinker. Mostly La Colombe Corsica and other dark roasts.

When me and the wife started making coffee daily as we started working from home, we went with a more economic approach with whatever Costco stocked with a Mr. Coffee drip coffee machine.

Last year, we got a Breville Espresso machine and I make an Americano every day. Still whatever I find from Costco though.
