If I’m using single coils on something like a vintage spec tele, there isn’t much breakup on the clean channel - a little hair and some compression. My Les Pauls with PAFs get pretty crunchy though, especially if the treble is high. This is a recent discovery and was totally unexpected…especially having owned the amp for 15 years now.

Was just running my LP too, which has an SD Pegasus in the bridge

It’s unfortunate that a volume drops occurs when running the volume up super high when going from R1 to R2… before even getting the amp I had been talking to Mike B. About III mods, he mentioned the + and ++ mods which after having the amp I’m so happy that I don’t really want to change anything, but I’ve heard of the R2 mod… he didn’t mention that in our initial talks but maybe I should shoot him another email…

R2 just turns your direct out knob on the back into a level balance knob. That can be helpful but you still have very limited adjustability tonally. You may already know all this.

My blue stripe had the R2 and Reverb mod from the factory, honestly both mods are wasted on me. I never use R2 and yanked my reverb tank years ago.

The + mod is just a couple cap value changes, the most prominent of which is the C30 position on the board. The blue stripe doesn’t have a value there, adding a 500pf there gets you effectively a red stripe, 1uf gets you earlier black dots and gets a bit of the rounder IIC+ vibes. I really like both but stick with 500pf now as the 1uf can get too wooly.

Where I typically have my Volume set (7), R2 sounds consistent volume wise, but mediocre…
Dining that knob definitely brings some more interesting usability to R2(and a still mostly clean R1 sound) but the volume discrepancy at that point becomes a thing lol

My purple is a reverb model but there’s no reverb tank on there. I already got the quote from Mesa for everything I need parts wise and it’s actually not that bad at all, about $100 all in I’ll probably do it at some point but honestly the cleans are so good on this amp I don’t find the lack of on board reverb as much of an issue as say… my 5153 or badlander. Crazy how a good clean tone on its own doesn’t drive you as hard into using reverb

I would like to spend some more time with tube rectification on channel 2 in 45 watts though

Let's get real about the Mark V toggles, switches and features.

Which ones do you guys use?
Which ones get set to a specific option and never toggled again?
Are there any that you feel are not useful?

I am cooking up a storm here, as we are hitting the road early in the AM to take
Thanksgiving to Chicago.

If I forget to come back to this when I get home someone remind me---or put a
timer up my ass. When it goes off I'll know what it is for.

Happy Thanksgiving Everyone! See you all on the other side of fat and sleepy!!! :beer:chef:popcorn:guiness

Well - in random ass news, I just impulse grabbed a simul satellite combo from GC’s used inventory for under half of what I’ve seen the next nearest one go for.

I’m going to pull the chassis and eventually drop it in a rack mount kit to be the simul power amp for my studio preamp. I had been keeping an eye out for a simul 290 or 50/50 but really didn’t want stereo and all those tubes in the 290. This thing fell out of the sky as the perfect solution for me - a mono simul poweramp that I can rack OR drop in a combo shell and carry around.

I’m also quite interested in how this combo might work as the power amp for my Helix if I really want to get wild. The Mark IV preamp model would probably be pretty authentic.

FWIW IMO you aren’t missing anything not having the verb in your III. It’s pretty useless, even with the reverb mod. If you use verb as part of your sound, you’re likely going to migrate to using a pedal whether or not you have that amp reverb tank installed.

Nice! I have a satellite board with my wah and an OCD on it now. If the amp would get here; I could give it a try. I am betting it will be here Monday. It's going to be a tough holiday break :ROFLMAO:
I feel this. I just impulse bought something that I want to be here yesterday but likely won’t get here for another week. Im going to make it a point to pick a political fight with family over Thanksgiving to help the time pass more quickly.

Trey anastasio too with the dual a.man tubescreamers and klon :sofa (although he also uses the lead channel too with the mid slider boosting)
