SHOW OFF YOUR PEDALBOARD!

I usually use my IRX for direct recording. But I put this together just for kicks to try through my Katana 100w combo effects return and it kicks massive ass butts!

Also, running the BossEQ200 EQ A pre gain and EQB as post gain (actually post IRX send in this case) is pure magic.

And I usually like all fuzz first in chain but placing that FZ1W post my drive pedals is like having a Godzilla monster tone fuzzy boost of Sonic doom.

This is seriously making me question using my tube combos live.

What channel of the IR-X do you run the Guv'nor into? Also, tell me more about how you use the Boss EQ-200?
The way I dialed the IRX, and the Guv'nor, it sounds good with both channels.

The IRX Ch 1 with the gain on 12 and a Telecaster, will give cleanish tones with the middle position (and neck pickup which I hardly use), and edge of break up/light gain with the bridge. The Guv' is set on pretty low gain so if I use it with Ch1 I'll get solid rhythm crunch. I then could boost the Guv' with either clean boost from the Pre Gain EQ, or with that Greer Tomahawk (tweed style pedal).

The IRS Ch2 is set for rhythm crunch and the Guv' will take it into moderate gain bordering on lead territory. If I want even more gain I'll boost with the Tomahawk. If I want more gain and volume I'll boost with the Rockaway post the Guv' . Hitting the FZ1W will give me the crush everything in my path Fuzzy Monster Lead Tone.

With the EQ, EQA is right after the compressor and before gain. I use this to tweak my basic guitar Tone. I'll generally do a less aggressive HI Pass filter, either cut or boost low mid depending on the guitar, and also typically control 4kHz tinny highs at this stage.
You can also use the pre gain EQ to pummel your gain pedals however too, with lots of mids and volume for a more saturated higher gain effect type of thing.

Then the post gain EQ will be to do overall tonal shaping based on the room. I'll do post gain EQ if I'm going into the front of my tube amps, which don't have effects loops. In the case above I went out of the IRX Send -> EQB -> H9, and into the Katana Effects Return so that I'm using just the Power Amp and Speaker of the Katana.
In this case I get even more control over the overall tone, that again I'll tweak according to the room, but this usually means a more aggressive Hi Pass Filter possibly, possibly notching down some low mids if the tone is tubby and bloated sounding, pushing the 1kHz and 2kHz bands a tad if I need more cut and twang. I could also push more volume here, like a clean boost, if I need a volume lift for leads for example.

The cool thing about this EQ unit is that you can very quickly dial things on the fly, live. Every room can produce all sorts of tonal challenges, and your gear is only as good as the room allows it to be in a certain sense as I'm sure you know already.
I had a live ambient music gig once where I was using two H9s and a DMM XO, and there was a meditative Gong player (😅, 🤷🏻‍♂️) also playing along. The room sounded like a tubby mess of mush and it was hard to cut through and not make things way too loud. I dialed up a High Pass Filter, killed some low mids, boosted some higher meds, and problem solved, it was like fookin' magic. That EQ saved the gig, no exaggeration.

If I there's a sound guy and a good PA on the gig the EQ isn't as crucial, but I won't ever have a live board without that thing on it at this point.

And even playing that IRX board in my living room just messing around, the one pedal that really brought everything together and allowed a truly killer tone was that EQ. Just sayin'.

Thanks for the thorough write up. I may have to try my Marshall pedals (I have the reissue lot) in the two free loops on my MS-3. The Shredmaster loves a bright preamp (Ch 1), and I'm sure I could get the Drivemaster/Guv'nor and Bluesbreaker to work with both channels.

The Boss EQ-200 may be worth looking into, as it has been awhile since I had a dual 15 band rack EQ, which was the awesome element in my rig.

You are most welcome! That's awesome that you have all of the Marshall reissues. I cherish my Guv'nor reissue, I just kills, and this is the first time I'm using it with a bit lower gain, as I normally use it with a Deluxe Reverb clone at which point I give the Guv' more gain!

Does the MS-3 do pre-amp/amp simulation? I had no idea!

And yeah if you are an old time lover of EQ I think the EQ200 is definitely worth a look! I also have a Para EQ that is great, but I like having the 10 graphic bands to be able to tweak quickly in a live situation. You can save presets too. I actually still need to learn how to program the foot switches though!

I'll have to try the Marshall pedals and see how those sound into the IR-X. I usually use the Guv'nor with higher gain.

Parametric EQ is great in front of the amp, but kind of finicky. A 10 band EQ I'd more fool proof. I have room for a Boss EQ-200, so I'll possibly add one at some point.

Agreed regarding the P. EQ.
Yeah that Guv’nor is brilliant with higher gain too of course.

Do you have an IRX already? If you don’t and you try one, just remember that EQ will go a long way toward making the IRX give up all the goods, at least in my opinion.

Yep, I have one currently on my smaller board. I need to do some cable management, though I plan on that after I decide what I want to put on there for the two additional loops.

Seems to be my best order for things. Sometimes I'm adding a Reverb via Native Instruments' Guitar Rig 7 via an Audio Interface to PC, which I'm considering replacing with a Boss RV-6 Digital Reverb Pedal.

I need to keep playing more.
