RIP Rick Derringer!

I met Rick a few times, we used to record in the same studio here in Tampa Bay. I used to run into him now and then as well, such a great and humble guy, Jenda too, just great people.

A couple of memories…
I had the opportunity to hang out with Rick in the studio and to tell him how much I appreciated him as a young guitar player growing up. I will never forget the huge smile on his face when I told him that I wore out 3 copies of Derringer Live learning those songs .

I was at a Jeff Beck concert here in Clearwater and during intermission I go to the bathroom and I am standing there doing my business and I look over and there is Rick, doing the same. He says “hey man how are you doing?” and of course I want to shake his hand or give him a hug or something but…well we’re both kind of busy so we just looked at each other and laughed. Afterwards we had some warm words about how great Jeff was and off we went.

Met him once backstage at a show that we had opened for Molly Hatchet, Derringer and Pat Travers. He was walking back to the bus after his set and I ran up to him, hand out, grinning maniacally, tripped over a cable and face planted right at his feet. Jumped up like nothing had happened and the look on his face was priceless...kind of a mix of fear and sympathy...but he shook my hand and listened to me blather about how great his set was like a gentleman.

He rolled up in a bus with all of his stage gear coming down the stairs after the door opened, along with two fat Bulldogs who had to go! His set was great and he joined PT onstage for a jam of Statesboro Blues that kicked ass.

So sorry to hear this...always was a big fan of him and the Winter boys. RIP to a great player.

Oh no ! You're kidding. I always liked that guys guitar playing. RIP Mr. Derringer.

I heard Derringer's playing a few times over the years, and seemed like he was a good rock player. But din't know he could play like this! I found some vids on you tube after he passed and seems like he could really play well in other styles too.
