If I told this before..., oh well.people are instantly in 'not going to do that' mode.
Last band I was in, the de facto band leader had a real narcissistic personality. So it was generally "his way or the highway" when it came to picking songs. I wanted to do R.O.C.K. in the USA. His instant reply: "Oh I can't stand John Cougar Mellancamp, so that was that.
(Like really? How does that even matter if it's a good, danceable song?)
Now our bass player never says anything, so when he jumps in and says, "Next week, everyone brings in 5 songs they want to do, we go around the room, each person picks 1 song from their list, and we work it up," our fearless leader really couldn't argue with him, because of his general lack of ever getting involved in these kinds of "arguments."
So it comes to me, and my pick is ROCK in the USA.
We didn't even need to learn it at home, it was so simple. Play the CD, 2 run-thrus, and we have it down! Smiles all around, except for a look of chagrin on you-know-who's face.
Not only was it such a crowd-pleaser, it ended up being our closer, I suggested we make it into a medley, by morphing into What I Like About You, (same key, same tempo, easy to do this), which ends up working beautifully.
I hated being in a band with a supposed know-it-all, but it sure was enjoyable watching him squirm when that song went over so well, every time we played it.
