POLL: Which Band do you think would do better?

Please vote and feel free to expound. After quitting 3 of the 4 bands I am in, the wife and I want to take another stab at the first band we put together with her as lead singer. We already have vox, bass and guitar so only need a drummer. We have a fairly expansive catalog. Be honest.. This is strictly projecting what club punters would want.

Where I live, you’d be attracting a very narrow subset of the population with either of those projects, i.e. 50+ year old metal heads. For a guy like me who has no interest in or attraction to it, there is no difference between any of the bands you listed. Not trying to be rude, this is just my opinion as one of the club punters.

If you want to play what’s popular, you might wanna lean more towards “pop” music.

While the NWOBHM absolutely has it’s fans, they tend to be a little more band-specific and can be caught in one net. With the 80’s glam stuff, you basically open it up to anyone and everyone who was there in the 80’s.

I thought I made a post about them last week, but Rich Ward (Stuck Mojo/Fozzy) has an 80’s tribute he put together that is so damn good they’re doing international dates now. I saw them Fri night and man, just REALLY f*cking great band. They pretty much keep it to the hits that most of us probably hated in the 80’s but love now.



I think in your questioning, with the 80’s glam stuff you’ll get all the women who loved that stuff in the 80’s…and their husbands. If you do the NWOBHM thing, you’ll primarily just get the husbands.

I don't take it as rude. I always appreciate honesty. Luckily where I am there is a huge need for a band to do the popular 80's Metal thing. I already do the Top 40 thing and just about every request we get is for Bon Jovi, Poison or Dokken songs or similar. We never get requests for anything new or anything uber pop. Maybe a smattering of Don't Stop Believing requests but thats still 80's hard rock. There's literally no one around here doing it. It's either Country, Latin, Top 40 like 60's to today or Heavier stuff. And of course some GB bands that can do it all on a whim but very few of those.

I can see why they are doing so well. fantastic band! I also love the mixture of media into the show.

Not one who frequents bars, or clubs, but has casual encounters with bands in Vegas casinos. The 80's hair metal would be most frequent OF THE CHOICES. In reality, the bands that seem to be the most popular are 60's oldies groups, or R & B dance groups.

I'm like you Bob, I want to be in a band playing music I like. Didn't get to do that in the 70's and 80's making money playing in night club groups. Not sure my current faves would be received well today, or making money choices. My taste and preference runs to 80's hair metal, then the NWOBHM. Not sure there is a big market for these today.

BTW: What came of tthe ZZ Top deep tribute band? I would love to play nothing but their music!

The songs were generally easier to play, and also shorter. Trouble is the 80's aesthetic ages the worst
the more we age, so there is that whole thing. Definitely the most ridiculous era of music ever from an
aesthetic viewpoint.

Well I am pitching more as a covers band than a pure Tribute. Believe me no one wants to see me in spandex!

What about a band that does only songs by women? Since your wife is the singer... I think it'd be a great idea.

Heart, Pat Benatar, Blondie, Bangles, Go Go's, Pretenders, Supremes, Garbage, Paramore, Spice Girls, No Doubt, Fleetwood Mac, Cranberries, Evanescence..., you could do a variety of styles, as long as you somewhat pick one or 2 lanes to stay in.

Oh I fully agree about that. This is more of a passion project for us and we really won't have to worry too much about draw. More about what will please MORE people the most that are into hard rock and metal. We are part of a Heavy Metal Tribute Band Network that has contracts with a a half dozen or so venues. Every event we have played in other Tributes has drawn well so far. We are switching it up. Did 2 different ( Ozzy and Dio era's) Black Sabbath Tributes for awhile and now moving into 80's Metal/Hard Rock in general. Just to expound we have a had a few local influencers ask why there isn't something in the network that delves into the glam stuff.

My wife and I have done quite a bit of stuff from that list of female performers you suggested in our Top 40 cover band that we have been doing for going on 10 years together.

I'd say if you expand the 80s stuff to the 90s, you have all of us 30-40 something rock fans who grew up with that stuff.

A friend of mine used to arrange synthwave gigs on the regular and the crowd that came there was generally as described above. A good bit of synthwave is like a mixture of synth sounds often paired with rock/metal guitar from a fictional 1980s that never was.
