what's the usual stuff people post here? more blues, jazz, rock, metal, country? anything goes?

I'm assuming the entries for the past seasons are in the members clips sections so I should sift through there?

thanks all, looking forward to it!
Varies from player to player, but yes, anything goes ;~)) I have submitted cover songs, original songs, hot noodles, electronica stuff, etc. Looking forward to your contributions ;~))

EDIT: Here is the Archive section of the challenge where you can browse through many of the old submits (as Fuzzy indicates below, this is an edit to my post)! Some members will not leave their stuff posted for a variety of reasons, but there is still a lot there. Point is, if you see someone talking about a submit, but there is no audio file link, it has probably been removed from wherever they had posted it. Also note that initially we were calling it "2023 Season 1", "2023 Season 2" and then next year "2024 Season 1", etc. but we switched last season to just give them a season number and not use the year, so come Jan 12 we will be starting Season 8 of the "Do Something Challenge" (first season was near beginning of 2023) ;~))

Most Challenge tracks are embedded in that season's thread if you want to check them out. Rarely does someone post them in the member's clip section.
Any kind of music goes, whatever you want to play! Just read the rules that Moondog posted.

Original Song - I think you can wrap your head around what that entails (tag = #original-song), but for those of you who can not, it is not some riff you came up with that you are going to build a song around, it is a song. For riffs and bits and pieces of a song, use the #hot-noodle tag! If you can not play it again, it is most likely not a song but instead, a hot noodle!!!
Is a piece of instrumental guitar music "a song", or are you saying someone has to be vocalizing somewhere in the track ?

What if I can play the rhythm part(s) again, at will.. but the lead guitar parts would be impossible to "play again" exactly the same.. since they were improvised while recording it ?

I would say that it is a song if you can play the rhythm parts again and it has some structure that is repeated each time it is played. The solo will of course vary! Just saying, if you are noodling on the guitar, and don't remember what it is you played or how you played it, and/or can't repeat it, that is not YET a song, that is noodling. As for vocals, IDGAF, it is but one element of most musical journeys (but one of the only things completely of the individual with no outside devices necessary to make and therefore a much more pure form of human musical expression IMO)!! Happy to entertain other definitions of "song" ;~)) Besides, you know how this works, you are the Champion (for now - see target on back)!!!

EDIT: Well, never really looked into it before, but most dictionary definitions indicate that a "song" must have lyrics. If it does not, it is considered an instrumental or a musical piece. For the purposes of this challenge, "song" will be defined as stated above, and will include instrumentals, musical pieces and other repeatable musical expressions that have a structured composition (ex. chorus, verses, bridge, middle 8, prelude, outro, etc.).

Depends on whether or not you're gonna do your own solo over "Still Of The Night" by Whitesnake.

Problem with that answer is.. the stuff I'm doing meets both definitions you're throwing out there..

As I said, the rhythm parts I write are structured and repeatable. However, the melody/single-note stuff is pure improvisation.

If it's in the vein of AC/DC (minus Malcom's parts), you're within the rules, I believe. Prolly should verify anyways.

. . . what are you gonna want me to tag this as ?
I'm gonna want you to tag that as whatever you think it is. If you think it is a song, tag it as #original-song. If you think it is a hot noodle, tag it as a #hot-noodle. My personal view would be that it is a 2min 18 second guitar solo and I therefore would not for my own submits, call it a song, but that is just me. We are just havin' fun here, so let's not get hung up on these definitions! If you call some a song and some a hot noodle, you will be crushing in both categories ;~))

And I will reiterate again, if you have definitions that you think would work better, please speak up. Happy to consider them ;~))

I think I understand you now !

Given this guidance, I think what I'm doing is going to be correctly tagged as "hot noodle".
