It's very easy to ask the seller to check the firmware number before you purchase it. EDIT > Scroll down to firmware version > select. Firmware 2.X only came with the expansion pack so if it's 2.x, you're good. I haven't had one in 10 years and I still remember this lol
The 11R update was never free. It was $99, I think, until they discontinued it.
Today if you have an older model, find one that's been updated. That should be relatively easy to find for about $200. Then sell your old one for $100-150 and at the end you have an updated unit for about $100 out of pocket i.e. SAME as the cost of the original upgrade, give or take a few $
If you can't do that for whatever reason, then maybe it's time to move to a new model, which is quite frankly to be expected with digital gear.
Or you can still just keep using your old one, a lot of the original models still sound good, especially the Marshall models.
